Both my kids are finally in school (!!) and my preschooler strutted in a little nervous, but without tears 💃 (which has not always been the case 👀). 👋🏼 I’m Dr. Hannah, a child psychologist and parent to 2 littles. I’m a recovered anxious parent myself- so I really do get it. Here’s what actually helped (from me as both a parent and psychologist):     •    Distract on the way in 🚗 – silly conversations, “I Spy,” jokes. We’ve already reassured them we’ll come back, and repeating it over and over can actually send the opposite message: maybe I should be worried.     •    Expect they’ll be OK -even if they cry💛 – anxiety + tears at drop-off are normal. Every preschool teacher will tell you that they are FINE within 5 minutes (like 99% of the time). What matters most is your confidence. If you’re anxious, they’ll sense it. Kids use us as their emotional barometer.     •    Quick goodbye ritual 💋 – a kiss on the head + “have a great day!” builds predictability. Short and sweet = secure.     •    Don’t linger ⏱️ – if crying keeps you there longer, kids quickly learn that tears = more time together. That makes separations stretch out instead of shrink down. Leaving your kid while they are crying WILL 👏🏻 NOT 👏🏻 TRAUMA 👏🏻TIZE👏🏻THEM.     •    Walk in side-by-side 🚶 – carrying them at drop-off can make the separation feel bigger and more intense. Walking in on their own = empowerment.     •    Tag in backup 👩‍👩‍👦 – if it’s too hard for you, let a less-anxious partner or grandparent do drop-off for a bit. They will keep the tone light and likely won’t be as upset by the tears. 👉 The goal isn’t to erase every tear, but to show them: “I believe you can handle this.” That belief is powerful. And hey… if your kid is still crying. ITS OK!! Some kids do take longer to adjust.
