They can detect sounds from far away and even move each ear independently to track what’s happening around them. That’s why quiet, gentle environments matter so much. ✨ Equine Day ✨ Cues Your Horse May Be Uncomfortable Not all pain presents as obvious lameness. In performance horses especially, it often shows up as subtle changes first. Pay attention when your horse: • Feels “off” but you can’t explain why • Pins ears during grooming or saddling • Struggles to pick up or hold a lead • Shortens their stride • Resists collection or engagement • Becomes girthy or sensitive to touch • Has sudden behavioral changes under saddle These aren’t personality flaws. They’re communication. Horses compensate incredibly well — until they can’t. When we evaluate a horse, we look at joint motion, muscle tone, compensation patterns, and how the nervous system is coordinating movement. Small restrictions create big performance changes over time. The earlier we address dysfunction, the better we protect longevity, soundness, and peak performance. Your horse trusts you to notice the whispers. 🖤 📍Message us to schedule an appointment. #EquineDay #PerformanceHorse #EquineChiropractic #HorseHealth #EquineAthlete

If you’re in the veterinary performance horse world like I am, you know equine practice isn’t just about emergencies — it’s about stewardship. The most meaningful part of horse care for me right now is long-term soundness. Not quick fixes. Not band-aids. Real, practical, everyday management that keeps working horses comfortable and usable for years. Preventative care, solid nutrition, smart conditioning, hoof balance, and catching small issues before they become big ones. I care about the kind of equine medicine that supports real-life horse owners — the barrel racers hauling on weekends, the ranch horses clocking miles, the backyard horses on small acreage farms. Functional knowledge. Practical solutions. Clear communication. Because good horsemanship and good veterinary care should work together. There’s something powerful about combining performance horse management with homesteading values — stewardship, responsibility, and respect for the animal. Sound horses, educated owners, sustainable systems. If you’re passionate about horse health, preventative care, performance longevity, and building a strong human–horse partnership, you’re in the right place. Soundness isn’t a trend. It’s a commitment. 🐴✨ #equinepractice #performancehorse #horsesoundness #preventativecare #barrelracing

In sport horses, “making it sound better” doesn’t make it better. 🤍 I know how heavy bad news can feel when it’s about a horse you love—and have invested so much into. That’s why my approach is simple: you will always get the truth from me—clearly, kindly, and without sugar-coating. 🩺✨ Not because I’m harsh, but because I care deeply about your horse’s long-term soundness and your peace of mind. Sport horses are masters at working through discomfort… until they can’t. 🐴💪 Catching issues early gives us more options, earlier treatment, and often a better outcome. Waiting rarely makes the problem smaller—it only makes the conversation harder later. ⏳ My promise: honest medicine, compassionate delivery, and a thoughtful plan forward. 🤝🤍 If your horse feels “not quite right,” don’t second-guess it. Send me a message to schedule a performance exam or lameness evaluation. 📩🗓️ #sporthorse #performancehorse #equinevet #lameness #hunterjumper

When feed, tack, training intensity and environment are adjusted simultaneously, improvement becomes impossible to track. Something may shift. But you won’t know why. And without understanding cause, stability never truly builds. Soundness restoration is deliberate. It requires identifying what sits at the root before layering change on top. If you’d like to see how that works across all six pillars, comment SPINE and I’ll message you the structure directly. #scienceforsoundness #equinescience #holistichorsemanship #horsewelfare

Hi, I’m Steffi and I’m an equine scientist. There’s a small shift in perspective that can completely change the way we see horses. Instead of asking: “Why is my horse giving me such a hard time?” we begin to ask: “Could my horse be having a hard time?” Because behaviour rarely appears in isolation. A horse that rushes might be overwhelmed. A horse that resists might be uncomfortable. A horse that shuts down might be carrying more pressure than their system can process in that moment. From the outside, these responses often look like “problems”. But from the horse’s perspective, they may simply be attempts to cope. That doesn’t mean we ignore behaviour. It means we become curious about what the behaviour might be responding to. Is the body under strain? Is the task mentally overwhelming? Is the environment creating stress? Is the relationship feeling unclear or unsafe? When we start asking those questions, something powerful happens. We stop seeing behaviour as something to suppress. And start seeing it as information about the state of the system. This is the lens behind the 6 Pillars of Soundness™ I teach through Science for Soundness®. Because when we understand what horses are responding to, we can begin restoring balance instead of constantly correcting symptoms. And that’s often where the real change begins. If this perspective resonates with you, comment SPINE and I’ll send you the details for Foundations of Soundness. #holistichorsemanship #equinewelfare

Hi, I’m Steffi and I’m an equine scientist. Many thoughtful horse owners experience this quiet form of doubt. Not because they lack dedication. But because they feel that something deeper is happening beneath the surface. A subtle tension. A slight shift in posture. An interaction that doesn’t feel completely right. Without a clear framework, those observations can feel confusing. Inside Foundations of Soundness I teach horse owners how to interpret those signals through the lens of the six pillars of soundness. Once you have that structure, the guessing stops. Observation turns into understanding. If that kind of clarity would support you and your horse, comment SPINE and I’ll send you the details. #scienceforsoundness

We often describe feeling “connected” to a horse. But what if part of that connection is measurable? In a controlled study, researchers examined heart rate variability (HRV) between 11 humans and one horse across three situations: • Separated • Same space (visual and olfactory contact, no touch) • Grooming Heart rhythm coupling was lowest when separated. It increased when they could see and smell each other. It was strongest during grooming. This does not mean their hearts beat at the same speed. It means the patterns and timing of their heart rhythm fluctuations became more aligned — suggesting coordinated nervous system activity. This was a preliminary study (one horse, short sessions), so it doesn’t prove emotional bonding. But it does show measurable physiological interaction. I find that remarkable🌟 If you’d like to read the research yourself, comment “heartbeat” and I’ll send it to you. Peace & Love Melissa #equinescience #equineresearch #healingwithhorses

Hi, I’m Steffi and I’m an equine scientist. The most important lesson I’ve learned working with horses is this: Behaviour never exists in isolation. Every behavioural expression sits on top of a system. Physical capacity. Mental load. Emotional state. Environmental conditions. Relational trust. When one pillar shifts, the others reorganise around it. That’s why addressing behaviour alone often leads to temporary improvement followed by new issues appearing elsewhere. But when you learn to assess the system as a whole, clarity appears very quickly. You start identifying what shifted first. And that allows you to intervene with far more precision. Inside Foundations of Soundness I teach horse owners how to run this six-pillar scan so they can understand their horses instead of constantly guessing. If you’d like to learn it, comment SPINE and I’ll send you the details. #scienceforsoundness

Hi, I’m Steffi and I’m an equine scientist. The horse world can sometimes be a surprisingly judgemental place. People are labelled. Too soft. Too harsh. Too slow. Too inexperienced. And somewhere in the middle of all those opinions are horse owners who simply want to do right by their horses. People who care deeply. People who are trying to understand what their horse might actually be experiencing. But when conversations revolve around judgement, something important gets lost. Curiosity. Because horses are not interested in our labels. They are responding to their bodies, their emotions, their environment and the relationship they experience with us. When we begin looking at horses through that lens, the conversation changes. It becomes less about who is right. And more about what the horse might be telling us. This is the heart of the work I share through Science for Soundness®. And it’s exactly the spirit of the Holistic Horsemanship Academy. A place where thoughtful horse people can slow down, ask deeper questions, and explore understanding without judgement — alongside others who care just as deeply about their horses. If that kind of space resonates with you, comment HHA and I’ll send you the details. 🤍
