If you’ve ever looked closely at a Jumping Spider, you might notice something funny—they sometimes look like tiny old men with beards and big curious eyes. This appearance comes from the dense hairs around their face and mouthparts, called setae. These hairs help the spider sense vibrations and movement, but they also give them that amusing “mustache” or “beard-like” look. Combined with their large forward-facing eyes, it can almost seem like they have a wise little expression. Jumping spiders are also among the most intelligent spiders in the animal kingdom. Instead of building webs to catch prey, they actively hunt, carefully stalking insects before making powerful leaps to capture them. Some species can jump more than 40 times their body length. Their eyesight is also extraordinary. Jumping spiders have four pairs of eyes, with the front pair providing sharp, detailed vision—something rare among spiders. This helps them judge distance perfectly before making their famous jump. Follow @animalclipsexplained for more!

Cyriopagopus sp. 'Bach Ma' is a medium-sized, undescribed species originally collected around Bạch Mã National Park in Vietnam. Due to the presence of long white setae on the retrolateral cheliceral surface, a defining trait of the schmidti species group, it most likely belongs to that group. Like the other species in the schmidti group, they are fossorial species. #spider #arachnid #tarantula

Setae are tiny, hair-like structures found on the feet of Crested Geckos and many other geckos. These microscopic bristles allow them to stick to surfaces using van der Waals forces, enabling them to climb smooth vertical walls and even hang upside down. 🌱 #crestedgecko

Do You Know that the Yeti Crab is the ocean's hairiest farmer? 🦀❄️ Named after the abominable snowman, this deep-sea crustacean sports thick, "furry" claws that are actually covered in silky bristles called setae. But this isn't just for fashion! The crab rhythmically waves its arms through the mineral-rich water near hydrothermal vents—as seen in this clip—to "fertilize" a crop of bacteria living in its fur. Once the bacteria have grown enough on the toxic vent fumes, the crab uses its mouth to comb them off its arms and eat them. It literally grows its own dinner on its body! 🍽️🦠 #DeepSea #YetiCrab #KiwaHirsuta #HydrothermalVents #MarineLife #NatureFacts #UnderwaterWorld #TheAbyss #BluePlanet #DeepSeaCreatures

New World tarantulas possess a crazy tech.. they can release urticating setae, tiny, barbed hairs from their abdomen, when threatened. These hairs can REALLY irritate skin and mucous membranes, making them an effective deterrent against predators. Like a built in, rechargeable pepper spray 🕷️

Geckos look like tiny magicians when they scamper across glass walls or hang upside down from ceilings. But it’s not magic—it’s physics at its weirdest. Their “sticky” feet aren’t covered in glue or suction cups. Instead, each toe is lined with millions of microscopic hairs called setae. Each seta splits into hundreds of even tinier branches called spatulae. At this nano-scale, van der Waals forces kick in—weak electrical attractions between molecules. Individually, these forces are minuscule. But multiply them across millions of spatulae and suddenly a gecko can generate enough adhesive power to hold dozens of times its own weight—yet detach instantly with a quick flick. To study this, scientists use Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), which fires beams of electrons at the surface of a gecko’s foot to capture images at the nanoscale. SEM reveals the intricate forest of setae, showing exactly how nature engineered one of the most advanced adhesion systems on Earth. This research inspires biomimetic materials—like climbing gloves, robot grippers, and medical adhesives—that mimic gecko feet. Nature cracked the code long before we did. 👉 What would you design if you could borrow gecko-style stickiness? Surprise surprise! Tarantulas aren’t the only ones with adorable little peets. Jumpers and tarantulas have very similar “paws.” The main differences are that rather than actual scapulae like tarantulas have (dense pads of adhesive hairs) jumpers just have tufts of setae (special little hairs) that basically act as a microscopic Velcro, allowing them to climb basically anything and cling to surfaces better than tarantulas. Other than that key difference, both jumpers and tarantulas have two retractable claws and their toes are very similar in look! 💜
