I finally potted up my tomatoes last weekend. After 4 weeks in soil blocks, these little guys were ready for more space to grow. Moving them into bigger pots now helps strengthen their roots, reduce stress later, and sets them up for a smoother transition outdoors. If your seedlings are looking a bit crowded or slowing down, it might be time to give them an upgrade too! Happy growing! 🍅🌱 #gardeningtips #growyourownfood #vegetablegarden #seedstarting

HOT TAKE if you’re not growing plants from seed, are you truly gardening? One of the main benefits of growing a garden versus buying vegetables from the grocery stores is that you can get varieties that you like. Which means the plants are adapted to and can grow better in your area, they can be more tasty, and nutritious. If you are buying plants and sticking them in the ground. There’s a huge chance that this isn’t happening. And don’t let me make you feel intimidated, you don’t need all the seeds starting gear in order to start your own plants from seed. You just need to know when the best time is to plant them out in the garden. Take advantage of your garden, and grow your plants from seed! If you’re skipping this step… your plants are paying for it 🌱 Thinning seedlings might feel wrong (I get it, you worked hard for those sprouts!), but overcrowded plants will compete for nutrients, water, and space… and none of them will reach their full potential. Instead of pulling them out and disturbing nearby roots, I always snip at the base ✂️ It keeps the strongest seedling intact and sets it up to thrive. Trust me, a little tough love now = stronger, healthier plants later. Have you been thinning your seedlings or letting them all grow? 👇 #gardeningtips #seedstarting #vegetablegarden #gardeningforbeginners #growyourownfood

If your tomato seedlings don’t look like this at 2 weeks, your lights are too far away. Keep them 1–2 inches above the plants and you’ll get thick stems instead of leggy growth. #gardening #seedstarting #tomatoseedlings #growyourownfood #gardentips

This is why your seeds don't grow… They need proper set up from the very beginning – good soil, consistent moisture, and the right environment to get started. It doesn't have to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional. Simple, thoughtful, and beautiful ideas like this – I share them here every week. #seedstarting #gardeningtips #growyourownfood #gardenforbeginners #vegetablegarden

It feels wrong every single time… pulling perfectly good seedlings 😅🌱 But overcrowding is one of the biggest reasons gardens struggle. Your plants are competing for water, nutrients, sunlight—and none of them can truly thrive. When you thin them out, you’re not “wasting” plants… you’re giving the strongest ones the space to grow bigger, healthier, and more productive. Less plants = better harvest 🙌 Save this for when your garden starts coming up—and tell me… do you struggle with thinning too? 👇 #gardeningtips #growyourownfood #vegetablegarden #gardeninglife #gardeninspiration

We’re in the middle of prime seed-starting season and next up, I’ll be sowing tomato and tomatillo seeds. I mostly use soil blocks, but I do still have some cell packs leftover from previous years. When they finally split or crack, I’ll recycle them. The soil blocks, however, produce the most vigorous seedlings with robust root systems. And they’re perfect for all types of veggies, flowers, and herbs. What’s your preferred seed-starting method? . . . . #seeds #seedstarting #gardeningtips #vegetablegardening #gardening

Stop pulling your seedlings—do this instead ✂️🌱 If you’re thinning by yanking seedlings out, you’re risking the roots of the ones you want to keep. Here’s the better method: cut at the soil line. Use scissors or snips and remove the extras right at the base instead of pulling them. Why it works: • protects delicate root systems nearby • prevents soil disturbance • keeps your strongest seedling growing without stress Yes, it feels wrong at first—but overcrowding will always cost you more than thinning ever will. 👉 Save this for your next round of seed starting 👉 Follow for more practical gardening tips #SeedStarting #VegetableGarden #GardeningTips

Are you in the one seed per cell camp, or do you like to thin them out? 🌱 Planting just one seed per cell has saved me so many seeds and a lot of time. If one doesn’t sprout, I just add another later and still end up with a full tray. No thinning. No wasted seedlings. 🙌 How do you start your seeds? 👇 #seedstarting #gardeningtips #growyourown #vegetablegarden #gardenlife

Potting up day! 🌱 Seed starting mix helps them sprout, but potting soil gives them the nutrients they need to keep growing. If you planted two seeds per cell, now’s the perfect time to separate them and give each seedling room to thrive. #gardening #seedstarting #growyourownfood #gardentok #gardeningtips 🌱

👇 1. Sow what you want to grow!! Don’t sow seeds for plants you don’t eat and only sow seeds for plants needed. This is not a chaos gardening friendly space lol as I am way too busy to try to keep an eye on a bunch of random seeds flung everywhere. 2. Keep a schedule - allot a certain amount of time each week for watering, weeding, harvest, and processing. Simply setting expectations can help you gain efficency in a task. 3. Transplant as much as possible - Direct sowing takes a ton of work weeding unidentifiable seedlings and overhead irrigation for success. It is easier to maintain 50 onion seedlings in one 1020 tray rather than spread across a 4x8 bed.
