SKJust so you won’t worry here is Rosa with her new pen mate and now we leave to simmer and settle. We tried a couple of mares which didn’t work but Silver is such a gentleman with ladies we figured we would give it a try as since he came in he hasn’t had a specific friend so we weren’t splitting up a pair. He’s a solid gentle sweet boy and is older like her and all the way down here I explained the importance of his new responsibility. He loves his food and so does Rosa so if nothing else they can be eating buddies as silver needs extra food and can’t be back out with a herd due to his gut issues which need treating. But he’s happy and healthy and Saint is still caring for Sienna and Raggedy Ann so all is well. This is the meeting I had hoped for, quiet and calm, no pinned ears and no chasing. Just a simple sharing of space and the awareness for Rosa that she has a friend close by. We moved Rosa and Marjorie Morningstar to the totally flat pen next door, because Violet has tripped a couple of times and we’ve had to help her get back up and with the flat ground and the sand we hope that she won’t fall again. Rosa can feel them and they are happier standing near her with a fence between them. So for now these two new friends are doing great and we hope they will grow closer as they share food and space. Just another day in the life of some rescued wild horses living their best lives and being themselves. CHDuring the cooler months, African penguins mostly focus on nesting and eating. As daylight hours decrease, they naturally pair up and settle in for snuggle season. While penguins don’t technically mate for life, they are monogamous and typically stay with the same partner during breeding season.
The sixteen 'flockstars' at CMZoo have been together since Water's Edge: Africa opened in 2020 (and some were together before that). Most seem to have settled into their pairings or friendships. Bonded pairs can be identified by the color and placement of their bands. Females wear a band on the left flipper, and males wear them on the right. If you see two penguins with the same color bands, they're bonded, which means they nest together. Twelve of the CMZoo African penguins are bonded, while the remaining four regularly hang out together but don't have a mate.
