Why history’s greatest failure is actually a masterclass in survival... 🚢❄️ Did you know? After his ship was completely crushed by Antarctic ice, Ernest Shackleton sailed a tiny lifeboat 800 miles across the most violent ocean on Earth, crossed unmapped glaciers on foot, and miraculously returned to rescue every single one of his 28 men. 🤯 Want to learn the ultimate survival and leadership secrets? Exciting news - Shackleton Greatest Story of Survival is starting on Netflix on 31st October! It was always my goal to make this film highlighting Shackleton’s leadership and its relevance to today’s issues and it was great working with directors Bobbi Hansel and Caspar Mazzotti to make this a reality. #shackleton #leadership #antarctica #climatechange

This is Sir Ernest Shackleton’s “Nimrod” Hut at Cape Royds. Often just referred to as Shackleton’s hut, it is a site of extreme historic significance. So many firsts happened from or at this building. Members of the team were the first to reach the summit of Mount Erebus, were the first to reach the south magnetic pole, and at the time, achieved the furthest south in their quest to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. The first book ever published in Antarctica was done from this hut… modern reproductions of “Aurora Australis” are still available for purchase today. Of the few originals that were produced, some are still around, but they are held in museums and private collections around the world. The hut is much smaller than Scott’s Hut at Cape Evans, but supported 11 less people through the winter. This was my first visit to the hut since 2017 so it was amazing to return. It’s much more difficult to get to than Scott’s Hut at Cape Evans because it involves traversing sea ice much further north. This is the pinnacle of our recreational trips that we get to do, just because of how logistically challenging it is to get there. Everyone wants to visit Nimrod Hut, and it’s easy to see why. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s tour inside…

Visting Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Nimrod hut at Cape Royds this summer in Antarctica. Thanks to the great work of the @antarcticheritage, this historic building remains intact and well preserved today. From this small hut in 1908, Shackleton mounted his attempt to be the first to reach the Geographic South Pole. They didnt succeed, but reached the furtherest south at that time of 88° 23' S, just 97.5 nautical miles from the pole. 📷 @richardsidey with @eyosexpeditions #shackleton #caperoyds #nimrodexpedition #antarctica #abandonedplaces

An expedition lead by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society has found the wreck of Quest, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s last ship, in the Labrador Sea. The wreck lies upright and intact at a depth of 390 metres, northwest of St. John’s and east of Battle Harbour, Labrador, in the traditional waters of Mi’kmaq, Innu and Inuit. The search was led by famed shipwreck hunter David Mearns based on extensive research by Antoine Normandin. Expedition members hailed from four countries and included oceanographers, historians, and people with close familial ties to Quest. Shackleton died aboard Quest in 1922 while en route to Antarctica, and the Norwegian-built sealing vessel went on to have a remarkable career that brought her into contact with a who’s-who of early 20th century polar exploration before she sank in the Labrador Sea on May 5, 1962. This is Sir Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery Hut. Built during the Discovery expedition in 1902, it is the older historic hut on Ross Island and provides an amazing glimpse into life in Antarctica during the heroic age of exploration. The hut is located at Hut Point Peninsula, not far from McMurdo Station. The hut is so different to modern construction that it is so hard to fathom how teams survived here in structures like this. It was designed to last just a few years but has stood the test of time- still standing over 120 years later. This area gets battered with wind, so it’s a surprise that it’s weathered so well. The extreme cold and dry have preserved the artefacts, making it a remarkably valuable historic site that offers a glimpse into the daily life of early explorers. The expedition made many discoveries but the hut was also a significant contributor to the success of other expeditions. Many explorers found shelter here while making their way back to Terra Nova Hut. The hut receives annual maintenance from the NZ Antarctic Heritage Trust. They ensure the longevity of the hut as well as the conservation of the artefacts to ensure they are still around for future generations. Being so close to Scott Base and McMurdo, the hut makes for an easy after work adventure. As I am a hut guide here, I regularly take people through to look around. I have probably visited the hut 30 times. My favourite part of the hut is the somewhat hidden room which houses the mutton carcasses and penguin skeletons. I also love that the hut was not only used to protect and house people, but is also commonly used to provide a wind break for penguins. Watch the full video for a little surprise :)

Famed British polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's last expedition ship Quest has been found at the bottom of the Atlantic off Canada's coast. The shipwreck was found in the Labrador Sea at a depth of 390 meters (1,280 feet). Shackleton went down in expeditionary legend after an epic escape he and his 27 companions made after another of his ships, Endurance, sank in icy seas off Antarctica in 1915. The explorer died aboard Quest seven years later aged 47. #AFP 🎥 Royal Canadian Geographical Society #Shackleton #antarctica #canada
