SI1. Select Targeted Prompts:
Use prompts like “What am I most afraid to express?” or “Which emotion do I find shameful?” These questions can help surface feelings and thoughts from your shadow, revealing parts of your self that need attention.
2. Journaling with Parts Work:
Focus on the emotions or impulses that arise from your prompts. Journal from the perspective of that emotion or impulse. For example, write “I am the part that is angry because…” This technique, known as parts work, helps in understanding and empathizing with different facets of your shadow.
3. Dialogue with the Shadow:
After identifying and writing from different parts, engage in a dialogue with them. Ask questions like “What do you need from me?” or “Why do you feel suppressed?” This dialogue can reveal the role of these parts in your overall psyche and their needs for integration.
4. Integration Techniques:
Practice active imagination or visualization to converse and reconcile these parts with your conscious self. Envision a safe space where you can meet and interact with these aspects, recognizing their value and integrating them into your daily life.
5. Regular Reflection and Acceptance:
Commit to ongoing shadow work by setting regular sessions for journaling and reflection. Continually accept and integrate newly discovered aspects of your shadow, promoting lasting self-growth and emotional resilience.

everyone seems to want me to cover rendering, but you can’t really understand rendering without understanding how shadows really work 🤔 so, to kick off 2025, let’s BEGIN our journey to rendering by working on our understanding of the fundamentals of shadows 👏🏻
this will actually be part 1 of a 2 part series on shadows - for this first guide we’ll start with terminology and basics, and in the next guide I’ll share some examples of how to find shadows on some more complex subjects! ☺️

AWShadow work is the practice of becoming aware of the hidden parts of yourself—the emotions, fears, desires, and patterns you’ve pushed down or denied because they felt “unacceptable.” These aspects live in the subconscious, influencing how you think, feel, and act without you even realizing it. The “shadow” isn’t just negative traits like anger or jealousy, it can also be repressed gifts like creativity, confidence, or sensitivity that you learned to suppress growing up.
Doing shadow work means facing these buried parts with honesty and compassion instead of judgment. It’s about bringing the unconscious into the light so you can understand why you react the way you do, heal old wounds, and reclaim your full self. The goal isn’t to erase the shadow but to integrate it—so instead of being controlled by hidden triggers, you move through life with more self-awareness, balance, and authenticity.

MYWhen I started shadow work, every discovery seemed to lead to another. The more awareness I gained, the more pressure I felt.
I understood what was going on, but I couldn’t move past my own shadow and felt frustrated.
I found myself rationalizing my emotions instead of feeling them.
🌙1. I soon learned that ignoring my shadow and emotions only made them more prominent in my life.
It‘s like trying to hold a ball underwater- you can do it for a while, but it costs a lot of energy, and eventually it will shoot up with force.
🫂2. I realized these wounds need love, not judgment. I became gentle, compassionate, and careful. I understand the process is messy, and plan sessions only when I know I have enough time to rest and take care of myself afterwards.
❤️🩹3. When i asked myself questions to find the roots of my suffering, i started focusing on bodily sensations as trauma is stored inside the body.
I have learned to just sit with myself and let this part of myself express itself as needed. I don’t analyze during this process, I encourage these emotions and fully surrender.
🌌4. When I surrendered and accepted things as they were, the burden of pressure fell away and my performance, ironically, improved!
💫5. I used to think my shadow was the worst of me. Now i know it’s home to powerful potential. I had only rejected it because others did, and I adopted that rejection as my own.
✨Radical self-acceptance in my shadow work practice has profoundly healed me and makes me feel powerful, whole and balanced. I can now look beyond the surface, connect deeply with others and extent that same understanding and compassion to those around me.
That’s the real gift of shadow work.
