Icelandic sheep are such a beautiful and unique breed that we have grown to love for many reasons, but they are the perfect breed for our cold Montana climate. here’s why: - They are super cold hardy because they evolved in Iceland, and they have a double coat which means they have one outer coat of long coarser wool, and a shorter inner coat of soft wool which gives them better protection against the elements. - They are a tri-purpose breed, which means they produce meat, milk and fiber (their wool) - They are resistant to disease and have a strong immune system - They are excellent foragers and thrive on a grass diet #icelandicsheep #shepherding

Who’s a good dog? Here’s one of our new lambs this season. She was born at 3:00 am during a huge rainstorm. Sometimes lambs are rejected by their mothers, which was the case with this young one. Thats OK, we’re prepared for these blips to happen. It just means that we’ve got a bottle-fed lamb that will grow up to be very friendly. We’ve had 3 other lambs born and they’re doing perfectly fine with their mothers. We’ve also added a new ram to our flock and he will be our breeding ram in the fall. One dog that’s stepped up to keep an eye on this little one is Kai. A calm unthreatening demeanor is the key to being able to snatch sheep, you won’t stand a change if you’re giving “predator vibes” 😂 After years of working sheep, we’ve found these to be our reliable favorites. My preference is the sneaky ones I always prefer distracted sheep when planing to catch them. My husbands preference is the direct ones… says a little bit about men and women 😂 When we need to work with all of the sheep we herd them into a holding pen and chute to alleviate stress and keep things calm. But when we’ve just got a few that need to be checked or given some extra attention we snatch ‘em. No sheep were harmed in the making of this video. Our sweet sheep know we’re helping when we snatch them, when we release them they don’t run away, they walk away slowly and calmly, or come back to see if I have alfalfa! #icelandicsheep #shepherding #montana

For a couple years we took good care of them and learned how to be proper shepherds, read every book, communed with other shepherds to learn what we thought we needed…grew the flock a little over the next 6 years, added a barn & some fences in 2008, grew the flock a lot over the next 15 years…they keep teaching you…the sheep, that is. Twenty five years later I’m still learning new things and trying to do my best by them.
