Realising I’m autistic has changed everything 🤍 For most of my life I was labelled “anxious”… but with hindsight, so many of the things called anxiety were actually my autism. I do have anxiety. But reframing has helped me understand what’s anxiety — and what’s neurological overwhelm. Here’s part 2 of things I thought were anxiety, but were actually my autism: When I overanalyse how long to make eye contact with someone when in social situations Having a “panic attack” on my art teacher because she asked me to change everything I had just done (definitely autistic meltdown in hindsight… not fear but overwhelm) Looking up photos and google maps when going to somewhere new so I know exactly where everything is in the cafe(insert every other place here too lol), and so I know exactly how to order, where to go, where the bathrooms are, how everything works so I know what to say and do. Psyching myself up before talking to people. In school always needing my friends to come with me to talk to teachers. Overanalysing how to go on dates. How dates work. The correct ways to do things. How long should make eye contact without seeming too much. How to go about paying. Never quite understanding because there’s no social standard to stick too. 💭 And for anyone who doesn’t know the difference: Anxiety is a mental health condition (you can develop it at any point in life). Autism is a neurological condition (you’re born autistic — you don’t suddenly “get” it).
