Ever wondered why your footage feels either cinematic or just... off?
It’s not just your camera or color grade - it’s motion blur.
And the secret behind it is your shutter speed.
All give clips in this video are filmed at 24fps, but each one uses a different shutter speed.
Same setup, same movement.
But the feeling? Completely different.
Here’s the breakdown:
1/20 → soft, slight motion blur;
1/50 → matches the 180° rule, feels natural
1/100 → sharper and cleaner, but a bit digital
1/500 → every frame is captured with almost zero motion blur
1/1000 → results in a hyper-realistic, frantic look that can feel “digital”
If you want your footage to feel smooth and cinematic, follow the rule of thumb:
FPS × 2 = ideal shutter speed At 24fps → go for 1/48 or 1/50
But if you want more blur (for style) or ultra-sharp frames (for sport / action) you’re allowed to break the rules.
What matters is knowing the difference and choosing the one that fits your story.
