Shutter speed explained. Ever wondered why your footage feels either cinematic or just... off? It’s not just your camera or color grade - it’s motion blur. And the secret behind it is your shutter speed. All give clips in this video are filmed at 24fps, but each one uses a different shutter speed. Same setup, same movement. But the feeling? Completely different. Here’s the breakdown: 1/20 → soft, slight motion blur; 1/50 → matches the 180° rule, feels natural 1/100 → sharper and cleaner, but a bit digital 1/500 → every frame is captured with almost zero motion blur 1/1000 → results in a hyper-realistic, frantic look that can feel “digital” If you want your footage to feel smooth and cinematic, follow the rule of thumb: FPS × 2 = ideal shutter speed At 24fps → go for 1/48 or 1/50 But if you want more blur (for style) or ultra-sharp frames (for sport / action) you’re allowed to break the rules. What matters is knowing the difference and choosing the one that fits your story. Which one would you use? #cinematography #shutterspeed #filmmaking #filmtips #creatorhacks

How shutter speed affects your photos! Shutter speed is the speed at which the shutter of your camera closes. A faster shutter speed (1/200s) results in a small fraction of light taken in by the camera. On the flipside, a slower shutter speed (2-10s) allows more light to enter your lens, making any moving objects appear blurred or in this case create a light trail. Slow shutter speeds are commonly used for long exposures, to create a crisp motion blur effect. Which do you commonly use? One of my favorite techniques for capturing motion is the ‘panning shot’—where you move the camera with your subject while using a slow shutter. These were all shot at 1/8 sec handheld in Tokyo. Here are a couple tips that help: — Set your shutter speed between 1/4 to 1/30 sec depending on the speed of your subject — Move with the subject in one smooth motion and try to keep them in the same part of your frame — Use continuous autofocus if you’re shooting digital, or prefocus on a spot if you’re using manual SAVE this post for next time you want to give panning shots a try! #panningphotography #motionblur #streetphotography #photographytips #slowshutter #sonyalpha

Master your Shutter Speed ⤵️ Shutter speed is an essential Camera Setting that needs to be adjusted not only to your FRAMERATE, but also to the LOOK and FEEL you want to archive! 💡 1/15 - Slower - More motion blur creates a more dreamy and cinematic feel. 1/60 - 2x fps - Natural Motion blur matches realism and most commonly used. 1/320 - Faster - Freezes motion perfect for Sports, Action or Slow Mo. This was shot with 30fps. #videography #filmmaking #videotips #tutorial #cinematic

Low shutter looping cinemagraph tutorial with @maciejsphotos, @bokeh_city, and @nomadict - Advocates ColorPro Awards 2024 Momentum! 📸 “In street photography, I use various techniques to capture a sense of motion and fluidity. My favorite method is shooting at a lower shutter speed, around 1/30 or even as low as 1/5. This technique works well for different shots, such as long exposures in busy areas like Tokyo. Another technique to use is panning shots of cars to convey a sense of speed when the vehicle is in motion. The biggest challenge is capturing a standout or minimal photo in a busy area. To address this, seek out a specific subject that is doing something appealing and lower your shutter speed to create motion blur from the passing people, ensuring the main subject remains in clear focus. For a unique effect, try creating a low-shutter-speed looping cinemagraph. Here’s how to do it with your photos: 1) First, set your camera on a tripod, though you can skip this if your camera has good in-body stabilization. 2) Switch your drive mode to high speed and set your shutter speed to 1/5 of a second. 3) Adjust your ISO and aperture based on your lighting. Here are the settings I often use: 3.1) Shutter speed: 1/5 3.2) Aperture: f/14 3.3) ISO: 100 If you don’t have an ND filter, you can increase your aperture to around f/14 or higher to compensate. Keep the ISO as low as possible. 4) Position your subject in front of moving objects, such as vehicles or crowds. When ready, hold the shutter down and capture a burst of photos—about 10 should be sufficient. 5) For editing: 5.1) Edit the first photo and crop it to a 4x5 aspect ratio. 5.2) Sync the settings across the other photos and export them. 5.3) Import the images into your video editing software, setting each photo’s duration to 0.2 seconds. 5.4) Export the video at 1080x1350 resolution to match your 4x5 photos for an Instagram carousel post.” @colorpro: Looking for street photography inspiration for your ColorPro Awards entries?
