Linux + Computer Vision This is just a little demo video of a project I've been working on titled "hyprgesture". I've been daily driving EndeavourOS + Hyprland so I thought it'd be fun to learn computer vision by creating custom macros for hyprland! + (shameless plug of my neovim config "nepfvim") My goal was: navigate my Hyprland desktop using just my webcam with MediaPipe + OpenCV, so I could have a bit more fun than just spamming hotkeys. 💻 Under The Hood: Mouse -> I ripped out the clunky shell subprocesses for the mouse and wrote an evdev virtual pointer. The script now writes pointer coordinates directly to the Linux kernel. The tracking is insanely fast and smooth now. I also added a magnetic snap for the pointer. If the cursor gets within 30 pixels of a target, it locks onto it to make clicking way less frustrating. It's still not perfect, but at least it isn't jumping across the screen anymore or impossible to click. Asynchronous Inference -> Moved the computer vision processing to a background thread. The camera feed and rendering loop never stutter anymore, even if the Wayland compositor lags. Pinch to Drag ->This is my favorite part. If I do a 3 finger pinch, the daemon queries if the active window is floating. If it is, it locks onto the center of my fingers and lets me physically drag the window across the screen in real-time. Orientation Tracking -> I implemented a quick 2D math trick to detect if my palm is facing the camera or facing away from me. This made the gesture recognition a lot better and opened up a whole new set of motions (like the 3 fingers to toggle fullscreen). 🖖 Gestures: Pointer finger -> Mouse Pointer + Thumb -> Click Pointer + Thumb + Middle -> Move Tiles Front Facing Palm -> Allows me to swipe through my work spaces. 3 Fingers -> Toggles Fullscreen Vulcan Salute -> Toggles Floating Windows. Rock On -> Opens Spotify. Okay -> Opens Browser. Pinky Up -> Opens Neovim. (don't judge my music taste) #linux #hyprland #computervision #softwareengineering
