Now that I make jewelry for a living, the support is a bit lacking, but still makes a world of difference! It be like that sometimes ... While I wanted some @silverringsplint for the hypermobility problems that are causing havoc in my hands, two OTs measured me and scarily had two very different measurements. I just didn't feel comfortable ordering something so expensive out of pocket to have it not be correct and have to add a whole other frustrating situation to my life. I looked into other options, so many of which would cost the same as silver ring splints or are wire wrapped. Fun fact about me, before my hands got really bad I spent so much time wire wrapping rings, necklaces, and sun catchers. It's a hobby I miss a lot. I have all the tools so I decided to give it a whirl and this thankfully took me less than 20 minutes to figure out. I guess I'll be ordering some stronger materials than this copper and whipping up my own finger splints. Here's hoping they help. If so, down the road I will find someone confident with the silver ring splint measuring system and upgrade. I was delayed, but a wizard is never late, my delay had a purpose and that was to complete a few more splint designs to choose from. I turned them into jewelry first and foremost, with support in mind. I will announce the launch date on Monday and send out a newsletter with all the details regarding sizing, pricing and whatnot. ad Ever wondered what it’s like to get fitted for ring splints? Let’s find out together! @wedesignsilversplints  are a dutch company who are medical specialist in ring splints, and they have just launched in the UK! So, I headed to my local specialist partner, Occupational Therapist, Nicola Goldsmith, to find out what ring splints are all about & how they can help with my hand pain, instability, and hyperextensibility which I have due to my hypermobile Ehlers Danlos syndrome. First, we talked through my history so she could get a holistic picture, as your hands are impacted by so many other areas in the body. Then she examined my hands to look and feel where there was instability, and I was surprised by how bendy some of my fingers were. Nicola was extremely knowledgeable & explained everything she was doing and the reasons why I struggle with pain and instability in my hands and arms, and she gave me some exercises to do at home to build strength in a manageable way. Once we had talked through her recommendations for which ring splints would be best for me, including elbow ‘ring splints’ I did not know they were a thing either! And she measured up my thumbs, fingers and elbows to send off the order.  A few weeks later & my ring splints had arrived, and it was time to get them fitted to me, as although they were in my size they needed moulding and adjusting to my hands. Each splint has a letter and number of dots so you know which finger it belongs to which is really helpful. Even with just a ring on my index finger I could already feel how much less effort I was having to put in when writing and my handwriting was so much smoother too!  The thumb splints needed a little more adjusting to get them to the perfect shape and it was so interesting to see all the different tools that were used but now they fit the contour of my hand really well. They’re already making a big difference and I’ve had so many compliments about them and I’m going to continue sharing how I get on with my new splints on my stories so make sure you keep an eye out and ask me any questions you have about ring splints in the comments! #SilverSplints #RingSplints #EDS #HandHacks

Writing with splints can take some getting used to. I fast tracked the process because I got mine during undergrad when I was still writing a lot by hand. I find plastic oval 8 splints don’t impact grip as much as they sit flatter on the finger but the ones I have from Amazon can feel pretty sharp & dig in more than my new custom ones from @zebrasplints so I guess as with all medical devices it really is a personal preference.
