THNot all silver plate is equal.
In Part 2 of The Silver Series, we’re talking about some of the most common silver plate terms and marks you’ll come across when shopping vintage and antique silver.
You’ll often see markings like Silverplate, EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver), A1 Plate, Quadruple Plate, Silver Soldered, Hotel Silver, Sheffield, and Old Sheffield Plate. These terms help indicate how a piece was made and sometimes the quality of the plating.
EPNS refers to electroplated silver over nickel silver, a common and durable base metal. A1 Plate and Quadruple Plate were quality designations used by manufacturers, with Quadruple Plate often indicating a thicker layer of silver plating.
Hotel silver is one of my favorites. These pieces were made for heavy daily use in hotels, restaurants, and rail service, which is why they are often so durable, substantial, and beautifully made. Many were marked Silver Soldered, referring to the strong construction method used to join metal parts.
You may also see Sheffield on silver plate pieces. This typically refers to the city of manufacture and many Sheffield pieces are known for their excellent craftsmanship. Old Sheffield Plate is an earlier technique where silver was fused to copper rather than electroplated and is often more collectible.
Understanding these terms helps you recognize well-made pieces and shop for vintage and antique silver with more confidence.
