✅ Download offline maps - connection fails more often than you expect.
(Especially once you leave main areas, get rerouted, or travel to nearby islands)
❌ Go early to avoid crowds
✅ Afternoons can be a great alternative - everyone goes early “to avoid crowds” 🤭
(May not work for the most trendy spots only, but it also means you don’t need to sacrifice your sleep. Just come when it feels right for you)
❌ Blindly follow Google Maps on a scooter
✅ If you’re not a confident driver yet, use car routes.
Google loves shortcuts - narrow, bumpy, steep, sometimes completely off-road.
❌ Skip travel insurance
✅ Medical care for tourists is very expensive - scooter accidents, Bali belly, dog or monkey bites happen more often than people admit 🫣
(Even small things can cost a lot)
❌ Use roaming or only non-local eSIMs
✅ Local SIMs are more stable.
Telkomsel has the best coverage and is usually cheaper.
(Especially outside Canggu, Ubud, and even more on nearby islands)
❌ Visit local markets expecting local products
✅ Ask around for authentic markets (there are many of them) to avoid insanely overpriced items from China.

Last year, Indonesian providers Telkomsel and XL switched off mobile data across the island for the 24 hours of Nyepi, and it will most likely happen again this year.
