I started offering my daughter Similac Total Comfort in the first month itself due to excessive colic issues. I won’t lie, it did make a difference. After the colic settled (around 4-5 months) we then switched to Similac Plus Stage 1 and then Stage 2 as she grew older. Soon Similac Plus started to get out of stock in all pharmacies and even online. We tried Aptamil Gold for a while but that didn’t suit her as it caused excessive constipation. As a result we had to switch to Similac Advance. We’ve therefore concluded that it’s either going to be either Similac Plus or Similac Advance as they suit her the best :) Disclaimer: We all know that breastfeeding is the best and is recommended by all doctors. I’m just sharing my personal experience here. Kainaat was on mixed feed (bm + fm) till 7 months! 🙌 . . I meet a lot of parents who have been recommended Similac formula as a way of managing their baby’s reflux- and colic-related discomfort. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of those little people (we’re talking 90% +), it is not a good fit. It actually makes their symptoms worse. Which is so frustrating! Because then these parents end up back at square one of trying to figure out if it’s the formula, baby’s gut, or something else. More often than not, the “something else” will be the original and primary cause of their little one’s reflux, but Similac formula is never a good idea. Here’s why: 1. Consumer Reports (USA) recently published a study that looks at the levels of heavy chemicals and toxins in baby formula. Similac Formulas over-represented when it comes to levels that neared what are considered “safe” exposure levels, as well as OVER. (Personally, I think this is just horrifying) 2. There is no Similac formula available that does NOT contain maltodextrin, gums, starches or FOS (fructooligosaccharides). These additives are often found in “comfort” and “anti-reflux” formulas because they essentially thicken the milk, making it harder to vomit. While this can look like a quick fix, what actually ends up happening is we push swallowed air bubbles into the gut, contributing to gas pain, along with food particles that your little one’s gut does not have the maturity to break down. These particles carry a high risk of fermenting, which is a process that releases its own gases while increasing the acidity of the gut. This can leave us with a little person who vomits less but is otherwise miserable. When it comes to choosing a formula for your little one, there are many better options than Similac. I’ve created an easy way that you can find local alternatives with the help of chatGTP.
