Originally written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and first recorded by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Simply Red’s version brings a smoother, more contemporary soul sound. Simply Red are a British soul and pop band formed in Manchester in 1984. The band is led by singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band initially disbanded in 2010, was the only original member left. They have released thirteen studio albums.
Hucknall was in a punk group called The Frantic Elevators, whose seven-year run produced limited releases on local labels and ended in 1984 upon critical acclaim for their final single, "Holding Back the Years".
After the demise of The Frantic Elevators, Hucknall linked up with manager Elliot Rashman. By early 1985, Hucknall and Rashman had assembled a band of local session musicians and begun to attract record-company attention, eventually signing with Electra in 1985.
"Fairground" was co-written and co-produced by frontman Mick Hucknall, the song makes extensive use of a sample of the Goodmen's 1993 hit "Give It Up".
Issued through EastWest Records, "Fairground" became Simply Red's first and only No. 1 single on the UK Singles Chart, staying at the top for four weeks in September and October 1995. It was also a chart hit in mainland Europe and Australia, but it failed to generate long-term success in North America.
Producer Andy Wright has said that for "Fairground", Mick Hucknall wanted to do a Brazilian, carnival-style track. Whilst Hucknall was at the dentist for two hours, Wright had the idea to sample a record that he knew of: "Give It Up" by the Goodmen, which in turn samples "Fanfarra (Cabua-le-le)" by Sérgio Mendes.
