Cold sores don’t actually take over your entire body, but they’re caused by a virus that stays in your system permanently once you’re infected. Cold sores come from the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). After the first infection, the virus travels through nerve pathways and stays dormant in nerve cells, usually near the mouth. When triggered by stress, illness, sun exposure, or fatigue, the virus reactivates and travels back to the skin surface, causing a blister. It doesn’t spread throughout your whole body during each outbreak, but it remains in your nervous system for life. The outbreaks happen locally, typically around the lips, because that’s where the virus re-emerges from the nerve.
