The Mystical Mr Kay by Meihan Boey In the English city of Tolwich, the Malayan princess Nora has founded a school for Asiatic princesses like herself - a vision which is thwarted when the body of one of the princesses under her care is found in a bathtub. To solve this mystery, Nora calls upon two old friends, fae-turned-governess Leda Cassidy and Singapore businessman Kay Wing Tong. They’re in a long-distance situationship because a) Miss Cassidy moved back to Scotland, and b) she’s now a ghost stuck in an otherworldly realm who can only move through mirrors. Mr Kay is determined to make his way to Tolwich incognito, even if this means travelling across England as an Oriental caricature: the Mystical Mr Kay, the Magical Mandarin Medium from Malaya. But Tolwich (IRL Norwich) turns out to be an absurdly haunted city due its witch-hunting past; besides its many ghosts, they must contend with a sinister tailor, a disturbingly alluring red bridal veil, and the goddess of toilets. I’ve heartily loved every second of this Singaporean supernatural fantasy trilogy! It weaves together mythology and history (e.g. one of the princesses is based on Sophia Duleep Singh, who was a real-life maharajah’s daughter turned suffragette - the afterword gives a nod to Anita Anand’s riveting biography on her). It’s a magical world where colonialism and capitalism simmer just below the surface, always about to erupt. I’m sorry that it’s the end of the trilogy, but I look forward to whatever Meihan writes next. Thank you to @epigrambooks for this review copy!
