CUSkylab was NASA’s first space station.

Launched in 1973 by converting a Saturn V’s S‑IVB fuel tank into a 270 m³ orbital workshop — almost three times the volume of the ISS Destiny lab, all in a single launch.

Skylab didn’t survive because its orbit decayed far faster than NASA expected. Even at ~435–455 km there’s still thin atmosphere, and drag slowly bleeds orbital speed. But the real killer was the Sun: the late‑70s solar cycle became one of the strongest on record, heating and expanding Earth’s upper atmosphere. Denser air rose into Skylab’s altitude, boosting drag and accelerating its fall.

NASA planned to reboost it with the Space Shuttle in the early ’80s, but the Shuttle was delayed — and Skylab reentered in 1979.
