A Sleep Study (Polysomnography or a Home Sleep Apnea Test) can help identify what’s actually happening while you sleep: from breathing interruptions to oxygen drops — so you can get the right treatment early. In Delhi, these tests are available at centres like House of Diagnostics, Max Healthcare, Apollo Hospitals, and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital — including convenient at-home options like the one I had booked. My wife’s sleep apnea diagnosis changed the way I practice dentistry forever. She was healthy. Petite. Up at 5:30am for Pilates. Certainly NOT what you picture when you think of sleep apnea. And every single morning she woke up absolutely wrecked. The sleep doctor ran the study, prescribed her a CPAP, and that was it. I was a dentist. I should have known what to ask. And I didn’t. Because nobody had taught me that the signs of sleep-disordered breathing show up in the teeth, the jaw, the tongue, the palate — long before a sleep study catches it. And that dentists can work together with sleep doctors to held their patients fix their snoring and finally access deep, quality sleep that reverses aging and protects the brain. So I got trained in dental sleep medicine with @dentalsleep_aadsm And I started seeing it everywhere. In patients who’d been exhausted for decades. In patients whose doctors had told them they were “fine.” CPAP saves lives. But it’s ONE tool. And for many patients, a custom oral appliance — used alongside CPAP or as a primary treatment — is what actually changes things. I’ve been a part of this conversation countless times: Me: “Do you think you’re clenching or grinding at night?” Patient: “Yeah… I’m just really stressed from work.” Stress can play a role, but here’s what most people don’t realize ⬇️ 👉 The majority of clenching and grinding is actually your body’s way of fighting to keep your airway open while you sleep. ** UPDATE on Monday 10 February: Did you get it right? ** To those who guessed that all those wires were part of a sleep study … 😴🎯! It’s called a polysomnography, an overnight study I took part in at @londonbridgehospital . All my life, I’ve operated on minimal sleep, usually just a few hours a night. While that was hugely advantageous, given how much I try to pack into every single 24 hours, lack of sleep can, of course, have major health implications for most people, especially as you get older. So I was keen to understand better what drives my lack of sleep and what, if anything, needs to or can be done about it. 🛌 Those sensors were attached all over my body to monitor my brain waves, eye movements, muscle twitches, heart rate, oxygen levels and breathing during the night, while I was also filmed throughout. The irony? It was a terrible night’s sleep! But then, I always hate hospital stays. When I shared a glimpse into my overnight polysomnography at @londonbridgehospital a few months back, many of you guessed correctly that the tangle of wires hooked up to me was part of a sleep study. Here's more on the sleep apnoea diagnosis I received and the CPAP machine solution I was prescribed. It’s not exactly glamorous - and I'm told I need to keep using it for the rest of my life! 😲 - but the alternative is far worse. Untreated sleep apnoea is linked to issues like pre‑diabetes, high blood pressure and constant fatigue. 🛌 Do you recognise any of these symptoms in yourself?
