SATo understand Slint you have to catch rock music right as it was rotting. Late 80s. Hair spray dying. Hardcore burning out. Everything slowing down and getting mean and awkward. Drop that moment into Louisville Kentucky. Wet air. Empty streets. Bored kids with too much time and too many thoughts. That is where Slint comes from.
They were never trying to invent anything. No manifesto. No genre building. No future math rock syllabus. They were just writing songs that felt like private thoughts you were not supposed to hear. Breadcrumb Trail sounds like a journal cracked open at night. Nervous. Bitter. Curious. Kind of horny. Kind of scared.
Brian McMahan does not sing so much as confess. Half spoken. Half unsure. Like Bob Dylan if he grew up staring at parking lots instead of highways. He is not asking big cosmic questions. He is trying to figure out why his town feels wrong and why growing up feels like something is being taken away.
The lyrics feel like stories kids tell each other that end badly. Boats. Woods. Dead captains. Nothing explained. Nothing resolved. Just images that stick and make you uncomfortable. Breadcrumb Trail is the doorway. Short. Sharp. Unfriendly. If it clicks the rest of Slint will haunt you. If it does not that is fine too. But if it does there is nothing else quite like it.

A few words about this legendary band from @sayonaracupcake
I remember the first time I heard Slint….it was on recommendation by the dude working behind the counter at Lou’s Records in San Diego…..I went to the counter and he literally just pointed up at the music playing overhead and then pushed Slint in front of me when I was there to buy Big Black (and I was there to buy Big Black because I saw @gavinrossdale name check them in almost every interview)…I bought the album….and everything changed….i immediately went out and bought a guitar….then I slapped a Slint sticker on it…..and it’s still there…..for the rest of my life thus far, anyone who cited Slint was more than OK in my book. This measure to gauge people has not failed.
