Sloths are the slowest mammals in the world and are often referred to as lazy animals, and incredibly, being slow is a great survival tactic. But how?
1- They have a very low-calorie diet: Sloths eat a few grams of leaves daily and donโt have much energy.
2- They are pretty much blind: Navigating the heights of the canopy is safer when you move slowly.
3- They have 30% less muscle mass than other mammals of similar size. Most of those specialized muscles produce slow, deliberate, and controlled movements.
But how do they survive?
The slothโs main predators (big cats โ jaguars, ocelots; and birds of prey โ harpy eagles) primarily detect their prey using sight.
Sloths move at a pace that simply goes unnoticed by their predators.
Sloths arenโt lazy; they are stealthy.
