The Northern Emerald Tree Boa, scientifically known as Corallus caninus, is one of the most visually striking arboreal snakes in the reptile world. Native to northern South America, including regions of Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, southern Venezuela, and parts of the Amazon basin, this species is famous for its neon green coloration and bold white zig-zag dorsal pattern. Northern Emerald Tree Boas are strictly arboreal, meaning they live almost entirely in trees. In the wild, they perch coiled over branches in an ambush hunting position, using heat-sensing labial pits and acute nocturnal vision to detect prey. Their prehensile tail provides balance and grip in the canopy, making them highly specialized for life above ground. Unlike their close relative, the Green Tree Python, Emerald Tree Boas have noticeably longer front teeth. These elongated teeth help them secure birds, small mammals, and other arboreal prey. While they are often described as defensive in captivity, this behavior is typically a response to stress, improper handling, or inadequate enclosure setup rather than aggression. Northern Emerald Tree Boas require: • High humidity, typically 70 to 90 percent • Stable ambient temperatures in the mid to high 80s Fahrenheit with slight nighttime drops • Vertical enclosures with sturdy perches • Minimal unnecessary handling • Strong airflow with consistent hydration They are not beginner snakes. Proper husbandry, environmental stability, and an understanding of arboreal behavior are critical to long term success. When kept correctly, they are hardy, long lived, and incredibly rewarding display animals. If you love arboreal snakes, exotic reptiles, and advanced reptile husbandry, the Northern Emerald Tree Boa is one of the most iconic species in the hobby. #exoticpets #boaconstrictor #snakesofinstagram #herpetology #viral

Most people would walk right past this snake… and never realize how helpful it actually is. This is DeKay’s brown snake — a small, completely harmless species commonly found in backyards, gardens, and parks across much of North America. These snakes feed on slugs, snails, and soft-bodied insects, making them quiet, natural pest control for gardens and native plants. Instead of biting, they rely on camouflage and freezing in place, which is why so many people never notice them. They’re also unique in that they give birth to live young and are often one of the first snakes seen in spring. Not every wild encounter has to be big or dramatic to be meaningful. Sometimes the most overlooked animals are doing the most important work. Out here sharing moments like this, we’re geared up in @forloh_official comfortable, durable apparel that lets us slow down, explore responsibly, and focus on the wildlife around us. #DekaysBrownSnake #BackyardWildlife #WildlifeEducation #HarmlessSnakes #ReptileAwareness

False eyes, or pseudo eyes, are seen in many species, most famously in caterpillars and butterflies that mimic snakes. Not all boas have pseudo eyes—in fact, most do not. We’ve noticed false eyes most frequently in boas with high Central American content, and especially in het leopard boas. Interestingly, we see it more often in snakes that exhibit more arboreal tendencies. Sonoran boas, for example, have been photographed preying on birds in trees in the wild. Perhaps it is an adaptation that helps the protect the more arboreal boas subspecies from the predation of larger birds or other tree dwelling predators, while themselves hunting. Have you noticed false eyes on your snakes? Let us know in the comments! #falseeyes #camoflauge #evolution #boaconstrictor #snake

The first snake that I saw in Greece was actually the last species that I expected to find! Sand Boas spend the vast majority of their time hiding under ground or burried in leaves and soft sand, so I assumed I would not find one. Luckily for this Boa, our car passed by at the perfect time to move him out of the road so he didn't get hit by another vehicle! My favorite part of this video is how UNENTHUSIASTIC my family was after watching me jump out of a moving car and come back with a snake 🤣 A passion for snakes was definitely NOT genetic 🤣 Fun fact about the Sand Boa's history in Greece, Sand Boas were actually used in war during the Ottoman Empire. Soldiers would catapult piles of these harmless snakes at the enemy to create fear and confusion during battle. It is believed that this artificially expanded the Sand Boa's native range to new parts of Europe. . #snake #boa #nature #herping #wildlife

This mesmerizing moment captures the true nature of one of the rainforest’s most visually stunning predators—the Emerald Tree Boa—caught mid-gape in a rare and fascinating display of its incredible jaw flexibility. What looks like an aggressive threat is actually a completely natural and harmless behavior, often used to stretch its ligaments, reset its jaw alignment, or prepare its muscles after feeding or resting. Native to the dense canopy of the Amazon Rainforest, this arboreal constrictor spends most of its life suspended gracefully over branches, blending perfectly into the emerald foliage with its iconic lightning-bolt patterns. Its oversized front teeth, far larger than most snakes of similar size, are evolutionary tools designed to grip fast-moving prey like birds and small mammals before constricting them with precision. Despite its intimidating appearance, this species is non-venomous and relies entirely on stealth, patience, and camouflage rather than venom. Moments like this reveal the hidden mechanics of survival in the wild—where every stretch, every movement, and every adaptation has a purpose shaped by millions of years of evolution. It’s a reminder that even the most fearsome-looking creatures are simply masters of their environment, perfectly engineered for life among the silent branches of the rainforest canopy.
