Since the molecules in the ice crystals are in a hexagonal structure, an arrangement that allows water molecules — each with an oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms — to form in the most efficient way. They can form columns and even narrow needles. But the most common is a hexagonal plate. The basic reason is that when water freezes it forms a hexagon made of 6 molecules, which has a bent geometry and a polar design where oxygen is negative and hydrogen is positive. The shapes of the snowflakes are influenced by the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere and are formed when the drops of water freezes on the particles of dust in the air. Depending on the temperature and humidity of the air where they form, the ice crest can grow in a multitude of different shapes.
