Two years ago, I learned this foundational headshot formula from my mentor @shootwithray —and it completely changed how I approach studio lighting. 📸 The core of the formula: • Main Light – Glow EZ Lock 48” softbox (boomed above with an AD600Pro) • Clamshell Fill – Neewer reflector below for balanced, flattering light • Hair Light – Speedlight + small modifier to add dimension and pop • Backdrop – Originally a solid Westcott X-Drop… but I’ve since swapped in hand-painted canvas backdrops to give the final images richness and texture This setup is simple, scalable, and works every time. Over time, I’ve tweaked it to match my style—but the bones are still Ray’s formula. 💡LIGHTING TUTORIAL💡 Today’s lighting tutorial has been requested several times: My Go-To Headshot setup. I shoot headshots and portraits Every. Day. (usually several times a day.) So this setup is brought on-location in office buildings, pharma plants, hospitals, restaurants, public spaces, homes, etc., so it’s easy to transport and setup/take down. (The key is to have a wagon or cart! Check my Amazon gear page in highlights or bio for my favorite wagon. It literally has more miles than my car, and can hold all the gear.) The only other piece that I sometimes use that is not shown is a reflector below the subject for a bit of fill/butterfly lighting. That’s an easy add to this setup. It is a simple 2-light setup, but there’s power in the subtly of the light height and angle to the subject. Everyone has their own style and look, so there is not right or wrong here. For me, I like to have the key light as close to the subject without being in the frame and the strobe 6” above eye height. I also like to feather the rim/hair light in the back to avoid shine on the side of the face. ❗QUICK TIP❗: Align the bottom edge of the umbrella with the top of the subject’s shoulder. It’s quick, on-the-fly way of keeping the light at a good height.
