The directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, wanted the main character, Flint Lockwood, to look distinctively eccentric. They based his chaotic hairstyle and oversized nose on the exaggerated caricatures of mad scientists often seen in mid-century comic strips. Interestingly, the voice actor for the character, Bill Hader, would frequently improvise his lines during recording sessions, leading the animators to redraw several scenes to match his spontaneous comedic timing and unexpected vocal inflections.
