BEThis Cthulhu now owns part of my soul... I’ve painted a lot of toys in the past few months… but this is different. This is the piece I’ve been building toward — my first James Groman Sofubi. An insanely detailed, intimidating, and expensive sculpt that I stared at for months before working up the nerve to spray a single drop of paint on it.
And I didn’t hold back:
Shades of paint used: 37
Hours spent: 40+
Full-blown meltdowns: 4
Times I repainted entire sections because I thought they sucked: 5
I’ve been painting for less than half a year, and this project was a crash course in patience, problem-solving, and knowing when to walk away before you start screaming at inanimate objects. I learned a valuable lesson — that less can be more. But for this one? I wanted more. More color, more detail, more time. I wanted it to feel alive.
The neon chaos might not be for everyone, but it’s for me. And that’s why I paint — not to profit, not to chase trends, but to create things that make me happy and help my anxiety.
Thank you to everyone who’s supported me on this little art journey. I hope this Cthulhu makes you smile… or at least fear for your sanity as much as I did while painting it 🐙👨🎨🙏

LE✨ Our First Smart Doll Boy – Honest Thoughts ✨
This is our very first Smart Doll Boy, so we went in with fresh eyes—no comparisons to past releases. However, we were familiar with the Sofubi body, as some of our girls have Peach Bodies.
The boy body stands taller than the girls, with more pronounced muscles. When the light hits just right, the sculpted definition really pops—a nice touch! That said, the full soft vinyl does come with some limitations, particularly when dressing him. The friction makes certain clothing items tricky to put on. Poseability feels similar to the Peach Body rather than the standard vinyl Evolve frame.
One issue we ran into: his feet popped off a few times when bending his legs. Unlike the pear body, where we hear a clicking sound when removing and replacing the foot, there was no click on the boy body. Not sure if this was user error, but it happened about three times.
Update on the foot 🦶🏼
Danny was kind enough to let us know how to remedy the issue!
If the foot pops out, try to push it in as much as you can which should prevent it from popping off. The shin shaft has a nub that the foot socket needs to latch on to.
Chris just did this on Rick and no more limbs on the floor! 🤭🥰🙏🏽

Some molds are much more difficult than others, they told me Kit & Momo is a little tricky to get right and pointed out which parts are easier to pull than others. Pulling them myself made me appreciate another layer to the design process and I can see how designing a toy that’s easier to pull can greatly streamline the production process.
