Grow plants not plastic! Suggestions below 👇 Plastic woven membrane is really ineffective in gardens for stopping weeds growing. All that happens is that a layer of organic matter develops on top which provides a perfect seed bed for plants to establish. Even worse though is the impact that it has on the soil, It will compact it. Because the organic matter cannot get to the soil which is essential for healthy soil, the worms and other insects cannot move it and eat it. There are no roots so the soil compacts because there is nothing to support it. Instead have multi layered planting with plants growing at different heights including lower growing plants such as Deadnettle, clover, wild strawberry, forget me nots, self heal, creeping thyme, herb robert, ajuga, plantain, dandelion, speedwell, chickweed. #garden #plants #soil #nature #nature

This may just look like cows eating grass, but there’s something amazing happening here in the pastures... Our cows graze a diversity of grasses, legumes, and forbs, using their long, muscular tongues to wrap around plants and pull them. This removes the top growth while leaving the roots intact, which helps stimulate new leaves and shoots. Meanwhile, the cows naturally fertilize the soil along the way. What might look simple on the surface is actually a remarkable biological process: a cow’s stomach can hold more than 95 liters of food and fluid, and within just one milliliter of that fluid live over one thousand BILLION microorganisms helping break down plant material. 🤯 This cycle of grazing, rest, and regrowth is biomimicry in action. As the herd moves on, the soil is left richer, the plants bounce back, and the cycle of grazing, rest, and regrowth keeps our pastures vibrant… and our cows happy and healthy! 🌱🐄 #cows #soil #farming #rotationalgrazing #regeneration

Did you know some plants are feeding next year’s crops? 🌱 Beans, peas, and sweet peas are all legumes—and they do something incredible. They take nitrogen from the air and store it in the soil, which is essential for strong, leafy growth. Here’s the key tip 👇 ✂️ When they finish, don’t dig up the roots Leave them in the ground, and as they break down, they release that stored nitrogen. Then next season… 🥬 Plant your brassicas (like cabbage, kale, broccoli) They’ll thrive in that nutrient-rich soil. It’s a simple, natural way to improve your garden 🌿 For more growing tips, watch the latest Step-by-Step Gardening—link in bio 👍 #garden #ukgardening #broadbeans #growyourownveggies #soil

In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Soil Conservation Service. 🌱 He witnessed the dust bowl and massive soil erosion take place in his life and knew that something had to be done. He recognized that this issue was more systemic than mere soil loss; he understood that if a country destroys the land that feeds it, it undermines its own survival. 👉🏼I fear that this basic understanding, this very ideal has been forgotten. 👉🏼I fear that we have traded our very heart and essence of an agricultural community for overproduction at the expense of our soil. That we have sacrificed longevity for short term metrics like yield and inputs. If you burn through your land like it doesn’t matter, you’re burning through your future. And if we lose the soil → we lose the foundation of the nation. 🇺🇸 • • #agriculture #soilerosion #conservation #soil #waterquality

Rachel Ives of @balmerinosheep decided to switch to organic to make her business environmentally friendly. Now, endangered birds make her farm their home. 70% of UK land is used for agriculture- so nature's revival starts with how we farm 🧑‍🌾 Like Rachel, we want a world full of insects, birds and wildlife - and it starts from the ground up 🪱 #Soil #SoilHealth #Agroecology #Organic

‼️ PSA: YOUR CRAP SOIL CAN GROW A GARDEN! If you think your poor soil won’t grow food for you and your family, good news—unless you’re on solid bedrock, most soils can be made growable with minimal inputs, allowing you to grow more food in the space you do have. Raised beds can be great for those with accessibility issues (though there is usually a fair amount of bending/hunching involved), but can also be expensive to buy and make and while options like hugelkulture exist (using sticks and organic matter to reduce how much soil you need to add), quality bagged soils add up quickly. Instead, here at the farm we start all our beds this way, as we have super heavy clay soil that is highly compacted. I first spread a small amount of homemade compost (here we did about an inch though the area would probably benefit from a bit more, closer to three inches). I also mix in a bit of alfalfa pellet fertilizer for organic matter and nitrogen. When soil is this compacted it can be helpful to do a one time till to help loosen the seedbed, you can skip it but it does help with the next step, which is sowing the cover crop. I sow a mix of seeds that can germinate in cold temps like peas/radish/oats and take and water it in. In four to six weeks it looks like this—and then I follow the steps we showed before in building mounded beds of soil to plant in. The seeds for the cover crop are inoculated with a mix of beneficial fungi and bacteria to help heal the soil, which will naturally help soften it over time. Want to learn more? My cover crop course including guide to different crops is now on sale (there’s a link in my bio)— need a free option? If you want to watch the video of us doing this process and explaining the steps, just comment “soil” and I’ll send it to you—make this your biggest garden year yet! #soil #gardening #victorygarden #homestead #selfsufficiency
