SOThis will always be one of my favourite clips of Solange. She’s 22 here, speaking about how she was navigating being a public figure, and there’s something about the way she talks that always stays with me.
She’s speaking about being young, not as an excuse but as something she’s actually allowing herself to exist inside of. She knows she’s going to make mistakes and there’s no urgency to cover that up or move past it too quickly.
There’s no pressure in the way she’s speaking, and no sense that she needs to present herself as already complete. She’s just in it, in that in-between space where things aren’t fully formed yet, and she’s letting that be enough without trying to rush out of it.
Maybe it’s just me, but now it feels rare to see that kind of ease, especially when everything is watched so closely and people expect you to get things right the first time. There’s this unspoken idea that you should already know who you are, or at least move like you do, but she doesn’t carry that.
It shifts something small but important, because it makes you realise mistakes are never separate from the process. If you really think about it, that’s where most of it happens.
