80The dreaded G word! This tuber I pulled from the ground has leafy gall.
Leafy gall is a mass of distorted leafy shoots on a dahlia tuber.
It is caused by the bacteria Rhodococcus fascians. This bacteria enters the tuber through wounds in the root or stem.
Sadly, this clump of tubers needs to be disposed of in the garbage as it can spread to other dahlias through the soil if I compost it.
Unfortunately, this means this bacteria is now in the soil where I grew this tuber. I’ve done some research and my plan is to solarize the soil by putting plastic on the beds. You want the soil to reach 160F for 30 minutes.
The other alternative is not to grow anything there for 2 years, but I don’t have that option.
Anyone else have any suggestions as to what to do about the soil? I’m all 👂
This is why I disinfect my tools between plants.

PRSolarization benefits for healthy soil👇🏻
now it a good time to solarize these beds for better soil next year. It’s too late in the season to plant a cover crop.
The heat from the sun will help to kill weeds, weed seeds, pathogens and other pests.
This will help clean the bed without the use of harmful chemicals.
It will also accelerate breakdown of organic matter (sunflower leaves and roots) to make food for worms and other beneficial bacteria.
In the spring this bed will be ready to plant with much less weed pressure, making it more manageable for us to care for it. Also providing a higher nutrient content for the flowers that will be planted here.
Solarization is a great way to start a new bed from scratch for the following season.

THSummer is almost here and we are beginning the process of soil solarization at Soil & Seed Garden! Today’s first step was using the tractor to dig up all the soil. This breaks up any large chunks and brings the seeds to the surface. Next we will level out the soil and cover it with solarization sheets for about 2 months! This should kill anything we don’t want in the soil. After that, we can uncover the soil, till it and shape it into rows for our fall crops! We are already looking forward to the next season 😎

ANChecking back in at the unofficial restoration site. Unfortunately someone has removed the bags I put down for solarization. That's ok tho, we might have to just go old school and hit it with a garden hoe. This is not the end, we will continue to work towards restoring this critical marshland ecosystem.
