In March 2023 scientists at DRDO’s Solid state physics laboratory elated as they cracked the code on GaN semiconductor technology. After years of hard work at DRDO and being denied the technology by the french during the 2016 rafale deal, scientists under the director Dr. Meena Mishra successfully built the technology in 2023. GaN that is gallium nitride is a material that has a superior thermal and electrical properties and it is critical for defence technologies like sensors, radars, satellites and missiles. Only a few countries like USA, China, France, Russia and the likes of Germany had this technology at their disposal and India successfully entered the elite club in 2023. In a typical titration, the known solution (called the titrant) is placed in a burette, while the unknown solution is placed in a flask below. The titrant is added slowly so the reaction can be carefully monitored and stopped at the correct point. An indicator or a sensor is used to signal when the reaction has reached completion, known as the endpoint. The endpoint is chosen to closely match the equivalence point, where the reacting chemicals have completely neutralized each other. By measuring the volume of titrant added at the endpoint, the amount of substance that reacted can be calculated. Using balanced chemical equations, this information allows the concentration of the unknown solution to be determined. Titrations are commonly used in acid–base chemistry but also apply to redox, precipitation, and complex-formation reactions. Because they are precise and reliable, titrations are widely used in laboratories for quality control, research, and education.
