"Stop scrolling and LISTEN to the center of our galaxy." Space is a near-perfect vacuum, so sound waves—which require a medium like air or water to travel—cannot propagate, meaning there is no audible sound in space. However, NASA converts data from space (radio waves, plasma waves) into audible sound through data sonification, making invisible cosmic phenomena "hearable". DATASONICA is an audio-reactive visual installation that transforms environmental data into sound and light. Commissioned by @future_botanic for the panel discussion “Narrating Planetary Crisis: Art, Data, and the Language of Sustainability” during London Art+Climate Week 2025, the work offers a new way to see and listen to climate data. 📊 Using a network of sensors embedded within the building management system of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Building 59, which is monitoring and archiving building level outdoor and indoor environmental data, DATASONICA captures continuous streams of air temperature, humidity levels, solar radiation, and dew point data. 🌧️ These variables are processed through a custom data sonification system that maps each dataset to a specific sonic parameter: temperature modulates pitch, humidity influences amplitude, solar radiation drives harmonic texture, and dew point defines tonal decay. 📹 The resulting visual composition is a dynamic ecosystem driven by the sonic composition. Here, data becomes resonance and architecture becomes instrument. Light and sound react in real time, forming an orchestral dialogue between the building and its surrounding environment. 🏙️ DATASONICA extends the conceptual framework of my series’ “The Building Orchestra”, proposing architecture as a sentient body that listens, feels, and performs the data it generates. It reimagines environmental sensing not as surveillance or measurement, but as a collaboration between systems, humans and the climate itself. 📈 By translating invisible climate phenomena into sonic and visual form, DATASONICA invites audiences to experience data not as abstraction, but as presence and a continuous signal of planetary change. You’re probably wondering if PlantWave is real. In the age of AI, that’s a totally fair question. The fact is we’ve been making plant music since 2012, well before all of these AI tools. So, here’s what’s actually happening. PlantWave measures tiny electrical signals in the plant. Those signals naturally rise and fall as the plant responds to light, touch, humidity, and movement. We graph those fluctuations as a wave. Then we translate that wave into pitch, and that pitch plays the instruments you hear in the video. Nothing is added. There are no loops and nothing is pre-composed. The sound simply follows the plant’s changing electrical activity. Curious and want to try for yourself? Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and has two sets of rings around its equator. The planet, which has four times the diameter of Earth, rotates on its side, making it different from all other planets in the solar system. Since Voyager 2 was the only spacecraft to ever fly by Uranus, astronomers currently rely on telescopes much closer to Earth, like NASA's Chandra X-Ray Telescope, to learn about this distant and cold planet that is made up almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. Now, listeners can hear the ice giant Uranus through the data collected by @nasachandraxray and the W.M. Keck Observatory. The data in this sonification reflects the amount of light detected from the planet and the orientation of its ring. Video description: Moving left to right, the scan begins with a cello that traces the arcing ring around the ice giant Uranus. The notes change to represent the amount of reflected light and its location on Uranus. The X-rays are heard as higher frequencies as the scan passes over the pinkish region of the planet. #StarrySights & starry sounds! This is a data sonification of the star cluster Caldwell 73. Scientists assigned sounds to different aspects of the image for a new way of experiencing the information in it! As the radar scans around in this sonification, the radius of the stars is mapped to pitch, so stars farther from the center are higher pitched. The entire image is converted to the sound of a choir, while the orange and red stars are represented by a marimba, and the blue stars are represented by a glockenspiel. Caldwell 73 is a globular cluster located 40,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Columba. A globular cluster is a spherical group of stars that are gravitationally bound to each other, with most of the stars concentrated at the cluster’s center. Sonification credit: SYSTEM Sounds (M. You can’t hear space. But you can translate it. The Helix Nebula doesn’t make sound — yet scientists learned how to listen to it. What’s really happening: 1️⃣ Light becomes pitch Brighter regions are mapped to higher frequencies. Dim gas sinks into low tones. 2️⃣ Color becomes texture Different wavelengths (infrared, optical, X-ray) are turned into separate instruments. 3️⃣ Distance becomes time As data sweeps outward from the core, sound unfolds like a slow breath. 4️⃣ The star becomes a signal The white dwarf at the center appears as a piercing, constant tone — the nebula’s heartbeat. 5️⃣ Space becomes pattern What looks like chaos reveals rhythm when translated into sound. Mind-bending fact: The Helix Nebula is a future mirror of our Sun. In ~5 billion years, our star will shed its layers the same way — a final message written in light. Alchemical layer: What has no voice can still be heard — if you change the language. Alchemy isn’t magic. It’s translation. Kovalev Alchemica studies the same principle: how hidden structures speak through form. Follow the signal. Follow the transformation. 👉 @alchemist_kovalev #CosmicSound #HelixNebula #Sonification #HiddenPatterns #AlchemyOfScience SpaceReels

Now streaming from 2.5 million light-years away 🎶 By translating light into sound, astronomers turned data from some of the world’s most powerful telescopes, including NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, into a new sonification of the Andromeda Galaxy. The Andromeda galaxy, also known as Messier 31 (M31), is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way. M31 has played an important role in many aspects of astrophysics, but particularly in the discovery of dark matter. In this sonification, the layer from each telescope has been separated out and rotated so that they stack on top of each other horizontally, beginning with X-rays at the top and then moving through ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and radio at the bottom. As the scan moves from left to right in the sonification, each type of light is mapped to a different range of notes, from lower-energy radio waves up through the high energy of X-rays. Meanwhile, the brightness of each source controls volume, and the vertical location dictates the pitch. Credit: NASA/CXC/SAO/K.Arcand, SYSTEM Sounds (M. Russo, A. A radar-like scan of the image emanates from the center point of the nebula and moves clockwise to produce pitch. Light that is further from the center is heard as higher pitches while brighter light is louder. X-rays from @nasachandraxray are represented by a harsher sound, while the visible light data from Hubble sound smoother. Credits: NASA/CXC/SAO/K.Arcand; Sonification: SYSTEM Sounds (M. Russo, A. The universe has a melody. 🎶✨🚀🛰️🌌🎻 This high-definition sonification features a massive cluster of galaxies as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. How Sonification Works: Since space is a vacuum, sound cannot travel through it. However, data is just information. By assigning pitches to the Y-axis (height) and duration to the brightness, NASA engineers can create a "soundscape." This allows us to perceive the vastness and density of the universe through a different sense, revealing patterns in the galaxy clusters that our eyes might overlook. The Galaxy Cluster: The "loudest" and most complex part of the audio occurs in the center, where the cluster is most dense. These galaxies are bound together by gravity and a massive amount of invisible Dark Matter. The gravitational pull in this region is so strong it actually warps the light of even more distant galaxies behind it a phenomenon called "Gravitational Lensing." 2026 Status: As of today, Sunday, May 3, 2026, sonification has become a standard tool for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In 2026, we are using "Multisensory Data Analysis" to study the atmospheres of exoplanets. By turning the chemical signatures of distant worlds into sound, 2026 astronomers can "hear" the difference between a water-rich atmosphere and a methane-heavy one, making discovery more accessible and intuitive than ever before. The Deep Field: Hubble captured this by staring at a "blank" patch of sky for hours. What looked like empty darkness turned out to be a crowded corridor of thousands of galaxies, proving that no matter where we look, the universe is teeming with structure. A masterpiece for the eyes and the ears. 🔭💎 ✨ Does hearing the galaxies make the universe feel more like a harmonious system or a chaotic orchestra? Black Hole Jet!⚫🎶 About 12 million light-years from Earth, at the center of Centaurus A, is an enormous black hole that is sending a booming jet across the entire length of the galaxy. This sonification combines X-rays from NASA’s Chandra & IXPE with optical data from the ESO’s MPG telescope. About the sonification: Sweeping around clockwise from the top of the image, the scan encounters Chandra’s X-rays and plays them as single-note wind chimes. X-ray light from IXPE is heard as a continuous range of frequencies, producing a wind-like sound. Visible light data from the European Southern Observatory’s MPG telescope shows the galaxy’s stars that are mapped to string instruments including foreground and background objects as plucked strings. What does a galaxy sound like⁉️ Tonight, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)—our closest spiral neighbor—is streaming to us from 2.5 million light-years away. Astronomers have transformed its light into sound, using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other powerful telescopes. Each wavelength becomes a different layer of notes: ✨X-rays → sparkling, high tones ✨Ultraviolet, Optical, Infrared, & Radio → cascading layers from deep bass to shimmering highs Brightness becomes volume, position becomes pitch—a cosmic symphony traveling millions of years to reach you right now. Tonight, as Andromeda rises from 10 PM to dawn, it aligns with the Perseid meteor shower, Venus & Jupiter’s morning embrace, and a surge of new galactic frequencies. We are being upgraded—receiving clarity, expanded vision, and light-body activation in real time, carried on the waves of light and sound. “Andromeda holds the memory of our starborn origins—reminding us that we are not separate travelers, but luminous threads woven into the great cosmic tapestry.” –📕 Mastering Quantum Creation: Awaken the Phoenix Within, Manifesg Your Reality, Reclaim Your Cosmic Power 👁️ Tip: Find a dark spot, let your eyes adjust, feel the meteors streak above, and listen to Andromeda’s ancient song.
