I stood in support of House Resolution 697, demanding the Trump administration end its illegal censorship of the Epstein files and release all records, redacting only to protect survivors. It’s unacceptable that while some claim to champion “family values” and the rule of law, hundreds of children abused by traffickers like Epstein have been ignored. We must ensure justice is served and that political influence does not cover up these horrifying crimes. The resolution passed the House, and I will continue fighting for transparency, accountability, and the victims who deserve justice. Here are my remarks from the house floor.

Today we advanced a bill that would allow lawmakers to use campaign funds for security systems and services. While I’m not super against this idea, I hate two things: The constant expansion of surveillance by both government and private citizens, and the way that feeds into our fear and paranoia of each other. I am not afraid of my neighbors! I’m not afraid of Nebraskans! Even the ones who hate me and are mad at me. I do not care. I do want the Legislature to expand the scope of our campaign finance laws to allow lawmakers to cover the costs of childcare and travel expenses for their minor children incurred as part of their official duties. It’s never sense to me that I can use campaign funds to take the entire Legislature out for drinks, but I couldn’t use those same funds I worked hard to raise to bring my young child with me to a Council of State Governments conference that I’m required to attend because I serve on a committee, for example. I can pay to take my staff to these events, but not my child. As State Senators we make $12,000 a year that obviously doesn’t come close to covering our expenses. Allowing candidates and electeds to consider child travel when it’s related to the duties of the job a campaign expense is one important way to help parents who want to serve the public. The more people are able to run for office, the more our body of elected officials will reflect the population they serve, and that is a good thing.
