NAyou don’t need Netflix with this tech drama.
Anthropic hid a switch inside Claude Code that silently downgrades you from Opus to Sonnet when their servers hit load. No notification.
You just keep paying for the smarter model and getting the cheaper one.

In February, developers started noticing Claude felt off.
Most people blamed themselves. Bad prompts.

Then one developer decided to actually look.
They went through 6 months of their own Claude Code session logs.
6,852 JSONL files. 17,871 thinking blocks. 234,760 tool calls.
And they ran the numbers:
Thinking depth dropped 67% by late February. Before that, median thinking was around 2,200 characters per response. By late February it was 720. By March it was 560.
The read-to-edit ratio collapsed. In the good period, Claude read a file 6.6 times for every edit it made. Research first, then change. By mid-March that was down to 2.0.
One in three edits in the degraded period was made to a file the model hadn’t even looked at recently. That’s how you get spliced comments, broken conventions, and code that doesn’t know what’s around it.
Full-file writes doubled. Instead of surgical edits, Claude started rewriting entire files. Faster. Sloppier.
Self-admitted failures tripled. The model was catching its own mistakes - but only after users pointed them out:
- “You’re right, that was lazy and wrong.”
• “I was trying to dodge a code generator issue instead of fixing it.”
• “I rushed this and it shows.”
With enough thinking budget, those errors get caught internally. With 500 characters of thinking instead of 2,200, they don’t.

“We found that effort=85 was a sweet spot on the intelligence-latency/cost curve for most users”
