The Overlooked Gap in Speech Therapy Education Many speech-language pathologists enter the field expecting to work with younger students. But according to Hallie Sherman, a major challenge in the profession is the lack of training and resources for professionals working with middle and high school students. When Hallie began her career in schools, she quickly discovered that while there were countless materials for younger children, there were very few tools designed for older students who still needed speech and language support. Many speech-language pathologists weren’t even trained in graduate school on how to effectively work with this age group. That gap created a difficult reality for many professionals in the field. Schools struggled to hire and retain specialists who felt unprepared to support older students, and educators often had to spend hours creating their own materials or adapting resources that weren’t designed for their students’ needs. Rather than accept the problem, Hallie decided to solve it. She began developing her own materials while working full-time in schools, sharing strategies and resources online for other speech-language pathologists facing the same challenges. What started as a simple blog and classroom resource library eventually evolved into Speech Time Fun, a business that now provides digital resources, professional development, and a membership platform used by speech-language pathologists around the country. The business lesson here is a powerful one: some of the best opportunities come from the problems professionals experience firsthand. By identifying a niche that was underserved speech therapy resources specifically for older students Hallie was able to build a company that supports educators while also improving outcomes for thousands of students. It’s a reminder that entrepreneurship often begins with a simple question: “What problem do people in my field face that no one has solved well yet?” Solve that problem, and you might just create an entire business around it. #NewYorksBusinessPodcast #SpeechPathology #SpeechTherapy #SpeechLanguagePathologist #SLPCommunity

What if the reason you’re struggling as a Speech & Language Therapist… isn’t actually you? The NHS does incredible work, and SLTs across the country make a huge difference to the people they support every day. But services are also under a lot of pressure right now. High demand. Large caseloads. Long waiting lists. And sometimes that environment can make it harder to practise in the way you’d ideally like to. If you’ve been feeling a little disconnected from the profession recently, it doesn’t mean you chose the wrong career. For some therapists, exploring independent practice is simply another way of practising — one that can offer more flexibility, autonomy, and time with clients. And sometimes that’s what helps people reconnect with why they became an SLT in the first place. 💬 Comment CURIOUS if independent practice has ever crossed your mind and we’ll send you our first steps to getting started Emma and Ruth xx💜💛 #slttrainingacademy #speechandlanguagetherapist #slt

The most simple, one of the most effective strategy in the book to support early language and communication skills. You don’t even need any resources. Being face to face! Think of it like this ✨ F.A.C.E. your child in play will help… F – Focus on their attention👀 Get their eyes and engagement… communication blooms when they’re tuned in A – At their level🪑 Sit, kneel, or get face-to-face so they can catch your expressions and mouth movements C – Connect with expressions😄 Excitement, surprise, smiles… your face is a language of its own! E – Encourage back-and-forth↔️ Pause, wait, and let them respond- that’s where real communication happens 💡 Small shifts. Big impact. Try F.A.C.E. next playtime ♥️ Follow along for more @im_your_speech_therepist

Just for fun, here are some things you may not know about speech therapists. A fun fact - I never drank tea or coffee before I started my first SLT role. It came hand in hand when I started. I never knew how to even make one (I always made Indian tea and coffee) and the first one I made was so disgusting - I am not sure how my colleagues drank it. Fellow species - can you add anymore? Did you know feedback falls on a spectrum across cultures? 🌍 Some parents respond best to direct feedback — clear strengths and next steps. Others prefer indirect feedback, with encouragement and a focus on relationships first. In speech therapy, adapting how you share a child’s progress can help parents feel supported and prevent misunderstandings. In my recent interview with Mahasin Daniels, an SLP who worked in Dubai — a city with mostly expat families — we talked about how to navigate these differences as a clinician. When you reach out to Bespoke Speech, you’re not greeted by an intake coordinator. You’re speaking directly with Rebecca. ❤️ Rebecca is the clinical owner and a Speech-Language Pathologist with over 18 years of experience supporting children and their families. Most parents first reach out feeling anxious. They’re not sure what’s going on with their child’s communication, they don’t know what questions to ask, and they’ve never done this before. This first correspondence is where it starts to feel different. 🙏 Rebecca takes the time to truly listen: to what you’re noticing, what’s worrying you, and what your child’s speech skills actually look like. She’ll offer guidance right then and there, answer your questions honestly, and thoughtfully match your child with the SLP on the team best suited for them. No unknowns. No “we’ll explain everything when you come in.” Rebecca will walk you through exactly what to expect at the assessment so nothing feels like a surprise. Just a real conversation with someone who already cares about your child before they’ve even walked through the door. ☝🏼That’s the Bespoke difference and it starts from the very first call. #SpeechTherapy #SpeechTherapist #SpeechLanguagePathology #EarlyIntervention #LateTalker

People often use the words speech and language interchangeably…but they’re actually completely different! Speech is how we physically produce sounds and words. It includes things like pronunciation, articulation, voice, and fluency. Language is how we understand and use communication. It includes vocabulary, combining words into sentences, understanding what others say, sharing ideas, and understanding the rules for how and when to use words to communicate for a specific purpose. A child can have challenges with speech, language, or both. For example: • A child might know exactly what they want to say but have difficulty producing the sounds clearly (speech difficulty). • Another child might say words clearly but struggle to put them together or understand what is being said to them (language difficulty). While this explanation is a bit oversimplified, I hope that it provides some clarity on the difference. Understanding the difference can help parents better recognize what kind of support a child might need! #SpeechAndLanguage #SpeechTherapyForKids #LanguageDevelopment #EarlyCommunication #SpeechTherapist
