There’s a moment in meetings that I think a lot of us recognize, but don’t always have language for. It’s when a parent is leaning in, clearly wanting to understand their child… and we’re doing our best to explain, but something in the space starts to feel a little disconnected. This really comes from we’re speaking in a language that was built for precision, while the parent is listening for meaning. And you can feel it. It might look like polite head nodding and the quiet “okay…” that isn’t quite landing yet. I used to leave those meetings wondering: If the information is accurate… why doesn’t it feel helpful in the moment it matters most? Over time, I started to notice something important. Families aren’t struggling with the data. They’re trying to find their child *inside it.* Inside real life. Homework time, mornings, family time and routines. The moments where things break down and nobody is sure why. And when we can shift, even slightly, from explaining scores to describing daily experiences, something changes in the room. You can see it in their face. That “oh… I think I get it” moment. The “that explains so much why we have been struggling at home” or the best feeling: “this really captures my child in a way I didn’t have the words for” Not because everything is suddenly simple, but because it finally feels connected. And from there, the conversation opens up in a different way. We’re talking less interpretative or assessment based and more about support, patterns and learning what they can do to help. Not just communicating results, but building understanding that can travel with families into real life. Something can use, feel, and act on. If this is something you’ve felt in your own meetings or reports, I’ve put together handouts that help bridge that gap, translating assessment language into everyday understanding for families. Comment or message me DRIVE to get access! And if you’d be interested in another index broken down this way, comment which one I should do next 🫶🏻⬇️ . . . #schoolpsych #schoolpsychologist #schoolpsychology #specialed #schoolpsychlife

We use mirrors during meals, snacks, and hygiene check-ins for self-awareness and real-time feedback. Instead of constant reminders of “wipe your face” or “slow down,” my students are building self-monitoring, executive functioning, and independence on their own. This is evidence-based, functional life skills instruction that carries over to everyday life. We’re building independence, dignity, and real-world skills every single day in our high school special education classroom! #specialed #lifeskills #specialeducation #autismawareness #executivefunction

Special ed teachers and paras are at their best when they work like a team, not like two people just trying to survive the day. 🙃 When communication is clear, everyone wins. Your classroom runs smoother. Your students get more consistent support. Behavior plans, routines, prompts, and expectations actually stay aligned. And most importantly… students aren’t stuck trying to figure out two different systems from two different adults. A strong teacher-para partnership can change everything in a classroom. It builds trust, creates consistency, and helps the whole team feel more confident and supported. If things have ever felt unclear, frustrating, or like you’re both working hard but not always together… that’s exactly why this matters. Comment PARA and I’ll send you my para training guide that helps make it all work. #specialedteacher #iteach #specialed

and sometimes that monotone droning on of 'first work then play' while overlooking their precursor behaviors (distressed nervous system) is just what sets them off 💥 Guilty of doing this early on in my career!! Now I prioritize connection over compliance... and I try to remember the impact my tone, voice, and energy can bring to a situation ✨

A position that's never been challenged isn't a position. It's a preference. And special education has been running on preference for 50 years. We've spent decades arguing about WHERE kids with disabilities should sit. Whose classroom. Which room. How many minutes in gen ed. Almost nobody has been asking whether they're actually learning once they get there. Here's what 50 years of research actually says — where a kid sits barely moves the needle. How they're taught moves everything. Small groups. Explicit teaching. Someone who knows what they're doing, focused on what that kid actually needs. That's what changes a child's life. Not the room. Belonging matters. Friendship matters. Of course it does. But you cannot belong your way out of not being able to read. If we keep choosing the feeling of inclusion over the reality of learning — who are we actually serving? 📲 Comment HOW for a quick daily research email. 2 minutes a day or less. #InclusiveClassroom #iep #specialeducation #specialed #iteach

It’s easy to confuse medical diagnosis criteria with IDEA law, or to think that one is = to the other. But they aren’t the same. IDEA requires BOTH: The child meets one of the 13 categories of eligibility & The disability impacts learning or access to education. A medical diagnosis can inform the team, but it doesn’t replace the legal standard. My IEP Eligibility Guide breaks it down clearly for both educators and parents & it’s available at Adjurcation.com! Comment diagnosis and I’ll send you the link! You can do it- I’ll show you how. 🫶#specialed #iep #specialeducation #iepmeeting #parentadvocate
