The secret isn’t reading every single word one by one. Fast readers train their eyes to take in groups of words at once. They also stop “saying” each word in their head, which usually slows people down.
With practice, the brain starts recognizing patterns and ideas instead of focusing on every small detail.
Reading can feel less like stepping through each word… and more like quickly understanding the full message.

GESpeed reading didn’t start with apps.
It started in the 1950s with a schoolteacher named Evelyn Wood. She claimed students could dramatically increase reading speed using techniques like minimizing subvocalization (the voice in your head) and reducing eye fixations. Her program, “Reading Dynamics,” became massively popular and was even used in the White House.
The core idea was simple: your eyes move too slowly. If you train them to move faster and take in more words per glance, you can read 2–3x faster.
In the 1970s and 80s, courses spread across universities and corporate training programs. Later, software companies digitized the concept — using rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP), where words flash one at a time in the same spot on the screen to eliminate eye movement entirely.
But as the techniques evolved, researchers began testing the claims.
Across controlled studies, one finding kept appearing: as reading speed increases significantly, comprehension declines. There’s a tradeoff between speed and understanding because comprehension requires integration, inference, and memory encoding — processes that take time.
By the 2000s, cognitive scientists widely agreed that while small improvements in efficiency are possible, extreme speed gains (like 3x with full comprehension) aren’t supported by evidence.
Today, speed reading apps continue the original promise — faster input. But the debate hasn’t changed:
