Communication Is A Human Right Day 9: How we got started. I was the mom who was willing to do anything to help my child. Why did I not hear about spelling until Rocco was seven? Why did a functional medicine doctor have to tell me about it instead of the team of “experts” assigned to him when he was diagnosed? Why did I, a busy mom and business owner, have to get certified myself in order to unlock his voice when I was told that all the experts were already doing everything they could? This was the most enormous blessing and I am thankful it unfolded this way, but the bottom line is families shouldn’t have to go to such great lengths to get basic communication supports that actually work. If you watch Rocco spell now, you’d never believe our start was so messy. But it certainly was, especially when he was a young sensory seeker struggling with intense dysregulation. As my teacher, the incomparable @rpmsoma says, “Yesterday was the best day to get started. Today is the second best day.” where will you be one year from now? If you just start today?

Here’s what a spell to communicate practice session looks like for us. I wanted to give a little bit of an explanation for new friends who are looking to start spelling with their kids. The purpose of a communication partner (which I am for my son) is not to teach them how to spell, but rather to coach their bodies to make the purposeful movements needed for them to get to the letters they intended to point to. Because they suffer from a brain, body disconnect, their bodies struggles to do what their brain wants them to do. This practice builds new neuro pathways that will help make that connection between their brain and their bodies so that they can one day be able to spell independently and share their own thoughts. When you start your spelling journey, you start on the three letter boards, where the alphabet is divided into three. Then you can move on to the 26 letter board. Which is where we are right now, we have been on the 26 letter word for about a month now. Disclaimer: I’m just a mom practicing and I might be doing something wrong in this video, but I want to share our journey to help others. I honestly did not know how capable and intelligent Malachi was so in previous years I was “teaching” way his grade level. Since he began with Spell 2 Communicate, it’s like a whole new world has opened up for him to share his comprehension and understanding in ways I never imagined. 🙏🏾💙 This year, it’s all about nurturing his education and independence! 😆🎉 Malachi, you amaze me every single day. Everything changed when we realized that what we were told by professional professionals, and educators about what Kyler’s cognitive abilities was wrong, and we finally found the key to unlocking his voice so that he can show the world what he is capable of doing and what he knows. The system has failed families of nonspeakers and their children who end up underestimated and misunderstood because of the lack of knowledge and information about the true nature of their diagnosis. Doctors and educators use evaluations that don’t take apraxia into consideration, leading then to end up with results that don’t show an accurate representation of what our children are capable of, which then leads them to recommend therapies that don’t cater to their needs and wont help them thrive, and also causing them to miss out on appropriate education.
