Regale me with your gruesome brown recluse bite stories, all I ask is that you think about it logically. Spider bites, and especially brown recluse bites, are incredibly rare yet almost once I week I hear a story about someone being bitten. Some percentage of those must not be actual brown recluse bites, otherwise why aren’t we taking this epidemic more seriously?!? In reality, bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance are most likely to blame for the rotting wound that needed to be excised or amputated. Spider venom evolved for prey capture, it is not meant for us. You can be mad that I’m putting a supposedly dangerous spider on my face. I can do what I want but will say that before handling any animal, you should be knowledgeable of their behavior and potential risks - this also applies to cats and dogs which many of you are happy to touch strange ones you don’t even know. I’ve known this spider for a year. Enjoy! #brownrecluse #loxocelesreclusa #spider #spiderbite #mrsa #staphylococcus

Bug bites can closely resemble one another, but observing their size, shape, and pattern allows you to identify the culprit and determine if treatment is needed confidently. -**Mosquito bites:** These typically manifest as round, puffy welts with a tiny puncture in the center. They are itchy and commonly found on exposed areas, such as the arms and legs. - **Ant bites:** Small, red bumps that can turn into painful, pus-filled blisters, especially from fire ants, are unmistakable. **Tick bites:** Initially, they may appear as small red bumps, but if a bullseye rash develops, it signals Lyme disease and requires immediate medical attention. - **Bedbug bites:** Look for straight lines or clusters of red, itchy bumps, usually found on the arms, neck, or shoulders. - **Scorpion stings:** Expect immediate burning pain, redness, and swelling, with severe cases potentially leading to numbness or breathing difficulties. **Bee or wasp stings:** These stings result in raised red welts with a central white spot, often painful, and can cause significant swelling in those with allergies. - **Flea bites:** You’ll notice small, itchy red dots on the ankles and lower legs, frequently appearing in groups or lines. **Spider bites:** While some bites look like standard bug bites, venomous spider bites can blister or ulcerate, indicating a serious issue. Recognizing these bites is crucial for proper first aid and knowing when to seek medical attention, especially if symptoms worsen or include fever, dizziness, or facial and throat swelling. ER said “not a spider bite.” She KNEW it was from a spider.
What does this look like? AGEP! Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis = sudden outbreak of tiny sterile pustules, often after meds — but yes, even spider bites (👋 brown recluse) can trigger it. The good news?
Remove the trigger → it usually clears fast. Moral of the story: sometimes the spider is guilty. @sarahtneal

Staph infections & MMA: what every fighter needs to know 🥊🦠 Staph (short for Staphylococcus aureus) is a type of bacteria that lives on the skin or in the nose of many healthy people—often without causing any problems. The issue starts when staph enters the body through cuts, abrasions, mat burns, surgical incisions, or shaving nicks, which are all extremely common in MMA and combat sports. Because MMA involves close skin-to-skin contact, shared mats, sweat, and minor skin trauma, staph spreads easily if proper hygiene isn’t followed. 🔹 How staph can affect the body: • Skin infections – Red, painful bumps that may look like pimples or spider bites. These can progress into boils, abscesses, or cellulitis if untreated. • Soft tissue infections – Deeper infections that can damage muscle and connective tissue, sometimes requiring drainage or surgery. • Joint infections (septic arthritis) – Staph can enter a joint, causing severe pain, swelling, fever, and rapid joint damage if not treated promptly. • Bone infections (osteomyelitis) – A serious condition where bacteria infect bone, often requiring long courses of antibiotics and sometimes surgery. • Bloodstream infections (sepsis) – In rare but dangerous cases, staph can spread into the blood, affecting multiple organs and becoming life-threatening. 🔹 Why early treatment matters: What starts as a “small skin issue” can escalate quickly. Ignoring redness, warmth, swelling, pain, or drainage can lead to prolonged recovery, missed training, or long-term damage. 🔹 Prevention is part of training: • Shower immediately after training • Clean and cover all cuts and mat burns • Avoid sharing towels, gear, or razors • Keep mats and equipment disinfected • Seek medical evaluation for any suspicious skin changes Your body is your most important tool in MMA—protect it. Early recognition, proper hygiene, and prompt medical care can make the difference between a minor infection and a serious setback. ✅Follow @drdavidabbasi for More Daily Medical Content & Health Tips! 🌴😷Schedule a consultation to see Dr. Abbasi as a patient in Delray Beach! How dangerous is the brown recluse really? Even the mention of the brown recluse is often met with disgust and fear, quickly followed up by an anecdote of a friend or family member that has suffered the “bite” of these fearsome spiders. One problem: 99% of the time the bite reports don’t match anything these spiders can actually do. That’s right, there’s not actual evidence to suggest these animals are capable of causing those gaping softball sized black wounds that people claim come from these spider bites, so what’s actually going on? Bacterial infections including MRSA likely make up around a vast majority of all “reported” brown recluse bites and are often identified as such by medical staff who have been taught to identify brown recluse bites off appearance. Bacteria is a serious issue and significant necrotic infections can easily become life threatening. By misidentifying these as spider bites this can escalate the effects and put the patient in unnecessary danger or risk of being mistreated. While the brown recluse has components that can cause minor necrosis (Sphingomyelinase D) it is not in a high enough volume to destroy cells and skin on the level people believe. Ironically enough, people have a “brown recluse” equivalent in many countries. In the UK people believe the harmless false widow causes bacterial infections with its bite, and in Australia they fear the harmless white tailed spider for causing the same gaping wounds. What’s more likely? That people who never see a spider, who find an itchy bump they scratch and ignore until it’s a nasty hole in their flesh and then decide it’s a spider bite because of its appearance are right in their assumption; or that bacteria, an ever present threat, is the cause for these global reports. It’s easy to assume the worst when it comes to spiders, and it’s a common thing for people to blame these creatures for mysterious bites, but I have been bitten, not once but twice on purpose, to prove the innocence of these spiders. Even my most extreme bite resulted in mild necrosis and mild scarring after it healed, nothing close to the life or limb-threatening effects people swear accompany the majority of bites.
