MRIf there’s one thing I would choose to share with a newly diagnosed parent it would be this. Let go of all preconceived notions, expectations, and timelines. The Spina Bifida journey does not have a play book. It will teach you how to relinquish control and gain patience far beyond any typical parenting experience. We give our children every tool, opportunity, and bit of support we can—then watch them go and write their own story.
I am so thankful for Bryn’s story. Her slow progression in mobility has given us the time to address our own internalized ableism, learn the limitations this world has for accessibility, and come to celebrate her disability with her. I wouldn’t change a thing about it except to let go of my expectations sooner.
