& honestly, I think I prefer them.
They come in such a wide range of colours, and are much more commonly even toned, vivid and naturally bright than corundum. Don’t hate me for saying this haha I still LOVE a good sapphire!
Of course the real GEMs are my favourite and take my breath away: the cherry-reds, cobalt blues, hot pink mahenges and Jedis (if you’re looking for fluorescence THAT’s the stone for you). These can even surpass corundum prices so if you thought Spinel was unknown or underrated, think again!
Watch out!! Because the current-day misconception is that Spinels can’t be treated. They CAN be heated, diffused and even lab-grown 🥲 so always ask for proper disclosure.

XARed spinel won’t replace ruby. But it will become the centerpiece when ruby is unavailable. And that’s happening more often now.
Nothing will replace ruby. The big three (ruby, sapphire, emerald) hold their position because of history, prestige, and color signatures that can’t be replicated.
Burmese pigeon blood ruby has a fluorescence, a glow, that’s unique. When you see it under the right light, it almost looks like it’s lit from within. No other red stone does that. Not spinel. Not garnet. Nothing.
But here’s the reality: finding fine rubies is becoming exceptionally difficult. Burmese material is off-limits. Mozambique production is declining. The supply crisis is real.
And when ruby isn’t available, what do brands use?
Spinel.
Red spinel has some fluorescence. The crystallization is similar to diamond, which gives it exceptional brilliance. The color can be close to ruby, especially in fine Mahenge material with open red and strong saturation.
It won’t replace ruby. But it will be used alongside ruby. And increasingly, in place of ruby when ruby simply can’t be sourced.
This is already happening. We’re seeing spinel appear as centerpieces in high jewelry, not as substitutes for ruby, but as intentional design choices when red is the priority and ruby availability is the constraint.
The same dynamic is playing out in pink. Pink sapphire is difficult to find in top grades. Pink spinel offers comparable color, superior clarity, and better availability.
So is spinel a trend? Absolutely. Not because it’s superior to ruby or sapphire, but because it’s the best available option when the traditional stones can’t be sourced.
And as more brands adopt spinel for major pieces, the perception shifts. It stops being « the alternative » and starts being « the choice. » That shift in language is what precedes major repricing.
Spinel is trending for the next few years. Not as a replacement, but as a parallel category that’s earning its own prestige independent of ruby.
