Spiny Softshell Turtles (Apalone spinifera) are turtles that I see quite commonly in my area, but this is only the 2nd large adult I’ve gotten my hands on! They’re super shy and very fast turtles! They spend most of their day buried in the sand and under water looking for prey, sometimes coming up to bask in the sun. Thank you to @gregsturtlehaven for letting me get a video with this big girl!

Sunday species spotlight: the Spiny Turtle! The Spiny turtle (Heosemys spinosa) is native to Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore and can also be found on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. They are commonly called ‘Spiny turtles’ because of the shape of their marginal scutes, which are quite sharp when the turtles are young. These spines are an excellent example of an evolutionary trait developed to discourage predators from eating the turtle during the first few years of their life. Despite conservation efforts, the Spiny turtle is still endangered. There are a number of ways you can help, such as reducing your consumption of palm oil. Be sure to check the label on peanut butter and chocolate candies; most major brands, unfortunately, use palm oil. #turtles #wildlife #nature #education #wildlifeconservation #conservation #tortoise #turtlelife

This little turtle is a sunny sandbar and a few crustacean snacks away from a good day! With a flat, leathery shell and a pinched, snorkel-like nose, these unique-looking turtles are a special sight to behold. This is a juvenile Gulf Coast spiny softshell turtle. While it’s a young, small thing here, if this turtle is a female, it might one day grow to quite an impressive size! Male Gulf Coast spiny softshell turtles don’t grow to be longer than seven inches in length, but females have been recorded at a whopping 16 inches long. Now that is an ideal sun-bathing body! Flat and pancake-like, the shells of these turtles provide a great surface for absorbing sunrays but offer poor protection against predators. To compensate for this lack of armor, these turtles can give a surprising burst of speed on land and streamlined, powerful strokes underwater. But a better plan than running from a threat is to not be seen by it (or your prey, for that matter). That’s where their special, straw-like nose comes into play. Burying themselves in the sandy or muddy bottoms of the freshwater streams and rivers they inhabit, these turtles will conceal themselves from sight, leaving just their nose or head exposed as they wait for unsuspecting prey to pass by. Once an unlucky crawfish, aquatic insect, or fish moves within reach, the speed of this turtle will aid them once again. As eggs and juveniles, these turtles have many predators; however, once they reach sexual maturity after eight to ten years, they face few. Their main threats include shoreline development, habitat fragmentation, and Rotenone, a chemical used to kill unwanted fish. So, while a good day might be all about good food and sunshine, a great day would include clean, connected, and protected waterways. Want to help make more great days like that possible? A big female Spiny Softshell Turtle from a rocky mountain valley creek in north Georgia! These awesome turtles are pretty common in larger bodies of water in the region, but are often hard or impossible to capture. This big girl was unusually chill, and hanging out in a shallow section of creek making for an atypically easy capture and release.

Every time I post a video with me patting or scratching one of the kids shells,I get a ton of comments about how “They can’t even feel that”.Well, actually they can.Spotty is thoroughly enjoying a good shell scratch in this video.Would she lean into it and actively seek it out if she couldn’t feel it?It should be fairly obvious that she not only feels it but that she sees it as a positive interaction.Dogs and cats aren’t the only animals that like this kind of attention.A turtles shell is basically an extension of their spine and ribs therefore it has nerve endings running throughout it.Hope this helps clear up the widespread perception that they’re unable to feel touch. #commonsnappingturtle #snappingturtle #cute #turtlesofinstagram #reptile

The video captures a softshell turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis or similar species) emerging from shallow, muddy water in a freshwater habitat, where its distinctive leathery, pliable carapace—lacking the rigid bony plates of typical turtles—blends seamlessly with the sediment, momentarily giving the illusion of a shell-less body before the full form becomes visible on the bank. This adaptation allows for rapid burial and camouflage, essential for ambush hunting in turbid rivers and lakes across Asia and parts of North America. Economically, softshell turtles are heavily harvested in regions like China and Southeast Asia for their meat, considered a delicacy in soups and stir-fries, and for use in traditional medicine, driving aquaculture farms and wild capture that have led to overexploitation and habitat pressures from pollution and damming. In their daily existence, these turtles lead a sedentary yet opportunistic life, often remaining submerged or partially buried for hours to evade predators and conserve energy, surfacing briefly to extend their tubular snout like a snorkel to breathe or strike at passing fish and invertebrates with proboscis-like precision.
