Interview Question: Your REST API works perfectly on localhost. In production, it returns 403 Forbidden. What did you miss? How would you debug it? This is not a coding issue. This is a security + infrastructure issue. In production, small misconfigurations break everything. Here’s how you debug it like a senior engineer: ⸻ 1️⃣ Verify Authentication First 403 means the server understood the request but refused to authorize it. Check: • Is the JWT reaching the backend? • Is the token expired? • Is the role missing in production DB? • Is SecurityContext populated? If authentication fails silently → 403. ⸻ 2️⃣ Check Reverse Proxy / Gateway Many production setups use: • NGINX • HAProxy • AWS API Gateway If the Authorization header is not forwarded, your backend never sees the token. One missing proxy header = complete system failure. ⸻ 3️⃣ CORS Configuration Works on localhost. Fails on production domain. Check: • Is the frontend domain whitelisted? • Are credentials allowed? • Is the OPTIONS request blocked? CORS misconfiguration is a classic production trap. ⸻ 4️⃣ Environment Profile Mismatch Dev profile ≠ Prod profile. Check: • Is CSRF enabled in production? • Are request matchers different? • Role mismatch? (ROLE_USER vs USER) • Missing environment variables? Production configuration mistakes cause silent 403s. ⸻ 5️⃣ Infrastructure Restrictions Sometimes the app is correct. Infrastructure blocks you. Check: • Firewall rules • IP whitelisting • WAF policies • SSL termination issues Not all 403 errors come from your code. ⸻ 🔥 Interview-Ready One-Liner: If an API works locally but fails with 403 in production, I compare security configuration, headers, and infrastructure layers before touching business logic.
