🇨🇳 China’s 广场舞 (guǎngchǎng wǔ), or “square dancing,” is an evening tradition where neighbors gather in parks and plazas to dance fitness routines together. It’s especially popular with older women, often called “dà mā” (“aunties”), and has grown huge: China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism reported over 120 million regular participants in 2023. This square dancing movement began in the late-1990s due to economic changes that triggered mass layoffs. Group activities like square dancing offered structure, social support, and an inexpensive outlet for people. Many square dancers meet nightly at dusk and are from older generations. ➡️ Studies suggest group square dancing can support physical and mental wellbeing. On Tuesdays, I usually feature professional dancers who have devoted their lives to perfecting their talent and artistry through dance. But this was too much fun not to share! I doubt that there’s a single professional-dancer-to-be among these Scottish school kids, but what a blast they’re having together. When I was in American elementary school a million years ago, we used to do a rough-and-tumble version of square dancing - in my imagination I pictured myself in a “Little House” book - but I suspect that’s probably long gone from the modern curriculum. . I don’t know if this is standard in all Scottish schools, and there wasn’t much of a caption. Can any of my Scottish followers offer more insight? This is me trying something completely new 😄!⁠ ⁠ Last week, my dear friend Charlene @charfeijer and her hubby Tim took us square dancing for the first time 💃.⁠ ⁠ It was in a beautiful rustic barn at sunset and I felt l was transported to a movie set 🎞. ⁠ ⁠ Thank goodness the teacher was really good and the caller was clear enough for us to hear all the instructions! 📢⁠ ⁠ I was whirling and do-si-doing left and right until we were winded and laughing hard 😂. ⁠ ⁠ I loved that everyone from age 12 to 82 could dance together, stomping on the worn wooden floors, and the looks on the faces. It was absolutely hysterical.⁠ ⁠ What struck me as interesting was that listening intently to the instructions forced you to stay in the moment. Our brains could not multitask or think about problems because they were too busy solving the task of stepping left or right 🤯.⁠ ⁠ I thoroughly enjoyed myself and highly recommend you give it a try soon.⁠ ⁠ Trying new adventures keeps life exciting and fun! 🥳 What are some recommendations you might have for this summer?

My heart is in my stomach. Before Rachel and I had ever even met I’d already been her biggest fan for a couple of months. I remember watching her from my desk jumping off the back of a boat and square dancing on air and thinking to myself “Yup, she’s my kind of people!” Little did I know that this little Australian who had somehow found herself in the Sun City would become one of my absolute favorite people. Rachel is one of the most dedicated, hardworking, and passionate people I have ever met. But the thing that really stands out, and that I admire most about her, is her ability to bring people together. She’s friends with literally EVERYONE! And she makes you feel like you’ve been friends with her for a lifetime even if you’ve only just met her. I personally think it’s why her interviews and sports reports are some of the most compelling, poetic, and human I’ve ever watched. Rach, everything you do is magic! I’m gonna miss you like crazy but know that you’ll always have a place to call home. Hip! Hip!
