WBA customer from another store shared her squirrel's story with us. 🐿️ You will notice that the baffle is effective multiple times. However, the customer was planting grass seed, and forgot to take note of the recommended 10 ft clearance zone when moving a chair. She noticed the squirrel circling the pole taking note of the different methods it was about to attempt because getting onto that feeder is always their goal! She sat to watch the entertainment and decided to capture some educational content for us!
Whenever a customer stops in and says,
"I have a squirrel problem! The squirrels are eating all of my seed!" 😱
We start with where they are, "Do you have a baffle on your pole?"
Sometimes the answer is no, and we suggest to start there. Sometimes the answer is yes, and we then get to help problem solve! Baffles are an extremely effective tool to keep our furry friends on the ground or at their specified feeders while still providing our feathered friends a peaceful place to feed. 🐦
However, with all tools, there are recommendations and guidelines for proper usage. In order for baffles to be the best they can be, all landing sources must be 10 ft ↔️ away and the top of the baffle should be 4 to 5 ft ↕️ off the ground.

SJSeed cylinders are so much fun to feed to wild birds. They last a long time and the birds can climb on and around the cylinders to get to their favorite seeds and nuts.
This seed cylinder feeder is on a shepherd’s hook with a squirrel baffle to prevent squirrels and chipmunks from climbing up the hook. Baffles are a great way to save your bird seed and prevent damage to bird feeders from squirrels. Hot pepper ingredients also help, but I prefer using baffles because they are a lot cheaper in the long-run. But not every yard is large enough or has enough room around trees to use a baffle. If you have questions about which baffle is best for your feeder and yard, come by the store so we can chat about the best solution for you. I’m certain we will find one!
We are working on launching our local delivery for plastic-free bird seed and other supplies. After that, the next phase of House Finch will be our house-made plant-based seed cylinders and suet (alternative) cakes! And yes, both products will have hot pepper options. We will still sell traditional suet and cylinder products, but feel thrilled to offer options for vegan and plant-based curious birders (including those with nut allergies). The cylinder in this video is one of ours, made with seaweed as a binding agent rather than gelatin.

MRDesmond responding to a warning call from a squirrel outside. Or maybe he’s sounding off a warning? It’s hard to say. But from what I saw in a video about it, I believe this call, is a response to a warning, not giving the warning. 🤷♀️ Winston never makes any noise unless he’s asleep, which I think is pretty cute that he has little squirrel dreams, so I haven’t ever put much thought into these noises.
