SOHow are you a Starthrower?
The Loren Eiseley essay describes a human picking up dying sea stars from a steep dry shoreline and tossing them back into the ocean, saving their lives. The onlooker thinks, this human starthrower must be crazy, there are so many sea stars, how will this make a difference? The witness approaches the starthrower and asks “why are you doing this and how will it make a difference?” the thrower essentially answers “it is making a difference to this one”.
I became indoctrinated as a Starthrower of sorts after my dad died when I was 11 years old. I saw and felt my extended family thrust my mom, my sisters, and I back into the land of the living so many times. They did it by being patient, they did it by standing by, they did it by offering support. What I learned was, it does matter what you do with your one wild and precious life, that we need each other and belong to each other, that gentleness and patience and care can be life-saving.
I am learning now, that stepping into your full self and full power can also save lives( first, your own). By reading women’s memoirs and connecting through art, by taking an active role in my own healing, I am learning that inspiration can be life-saving and life-giving. I’m learning that the depth of my grief is also the vastness of my capacity for love. I am learning that I can show care and patience and courage for myself and others and the earth in all types of ways. My album, STARTHROWERS, is an expression of the gratitude I have for the Starthrowers in my family and in the wide world. I am remembering who I am, I am singing with a whole-heart, I am answering the call of the longing for deep connection. I am a Starthrower.

VIEs war einmal ein Mann. Er spazierte oft am Strand entlang.
Eines Tages sah er einen Jungen, der emsig am Strand umherlief, etwas aufhob und ins Meer warf. Als der Mann näher kam, fragte er den Jungen: „Entschumdige, was machst Du da?“
Der Junge richtete sich auf und sprach: „Ich werfe die Seesterne, die durch die Flut an Land gespült wurden, ins Meer zurück. Es ist Ebbe und die Sonne brennt. Wenn ich es nicht tue, dann sterben sie.“
Verwundert sah der Mann ihn an. „Ist Dir denn nicht klar, dass der Strand hier meilenweit ist? Es liegen überall Seesterne. Du kannst sie unmöglich alle retten. Was hat es da für eine Bedeutung, ob du die paar zurück ins Wasser wirfst?“
Da hob der Junge einen weiteren Seestern auf, lächelte und sprach: „Für diesen einen bedeutet es alles.“
