SNThis isn't a look into the upside-down or an alien world, but actually the hive of Tetragonula hockingsi. This is a stingless bee that makes its homes in Australia with quite the knack for building. While the combs seem quite irregular with involucrum layers and other strange structures, there is a method to the madness.
Porous chambers throughout allow for air to flow well when hot temperatures are present. Cells are constructed upon each other and are supported by the gangly pillars made from wax. The wax also distributes pheromones and gives the hive a distinct smell.
