LOSpending the day with the Amish and Mennonites at the Walnut Creek Cheese Foods Show is always a pleasure. Besides the cute babies balanced on their mama’s hip and the sea of prayer coverings and wide-brimmed hats, there were many vendors displaying their foods and offering samples in the large event center at Mt. Hope.

We enjoyed the seminars, and especially appreciated listening to the words of wisdom from founder Mark Coblentz whom I remember from my teenage years when he was just starting his food business.

I am grateful for this heritage and for being raised in this tight-knit community where small businesses thrive and entrepreneurial efforts are applauded and nourished.

THMany people wonder “Do Amish go to the fair?” and the honest answer is yes, many Amish do attend local county fairs, although it largely depends on church membership, community standards, and the rules of their local Ordnung (the unwritten code of conduct that guides Amish daily life). County fairs have long been part of rural culture across the Midwest and parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio, and they often overlap with the agricultural traditions that Amish families value, including livestock showing, produce exhibitions, harness competitions, quilting displays, and farm equipment demonstrations.
For Amish individuals who are baptized members of the church, attendance can sometimes be restricted because fairs often include elements viewed as worldly entertainment, such as midway rides, amplified music, games of chance, or commercial attractions. Many church districts discourage participation in these activities because they may conflict with values centered on humility, separation from modern culture, and modest recreation. In some communities, members may attend only for agricultural or business purposes, while others avoid fairs entirely out of obedience to church leadership.
However, Amish youth who have not yet joined the church, particularly those in their teenage years are often more likely to attend fairs socially, especially during the period before baptism when personal choices are less regulated. Families may also visit during quieter daytime hours to purchase tools, livestock supplies, baked goods, or handcrafted items sold by local vendors.
Community differences play a major role. Some conservative Amish settlements prohibit attendance regardless of age or church status, viewing fairs as incompatible with their Ordnung. Other, more moderate districts allow limited participation so long as individuals avoid entertainment activities considered inappropriate. Because each church district governs itself independently, practices can vary widely even between neighboring settlements.
