Sometimes breaking a piece isn’t about losing it…
it’s about making it possible.
This form wasn’t one piece, because the kiln said so.
So instead of resisting, I chose to work with it.
That’s what ceramics is…
not about control, but about understanding.
I divided it, because that’s how it could be fired.
I didn’t place it upright, because I know how glaze flows.
And now…
each piece stands in its own place, yet feels whole.
Both aesthetic and functional…
and yes, it even fits easily into a cabinet 😌
What looks like a flaw

LOTamsin Levene (@tamsinleveneceramics) is a ceramic artist based in the UK, working with clay since 1992. This potter creates refined ceramics in stoneware and porcelain, exploring surface-rich firing methods like naked raku, saggar, horse-hair raku, and other layered pottery techniques that turn fire and smoke into part of the art.
Tamsin showcases a calming raku reveal, peeling away the outer layer to uncover the smoky pattern beneath. As the surface lifts, the pottery shifts from muted clay tones to dramatic black tracery and delicate floral detail—ceramics shaped not just by the potter’s hand, but by flame, smoke, and chance. These pieces were shown at Oxfordshire Artweeks (@oxfordshireartweeks)’s exhibition.
