TAEveryone comes here in summer for the famous Stoos ridge hike, but winter is just as fantastic.
You take the world’s steepest funicular up to @stoos.ch , then chairlift (remember this when packing!) and check into @fronalpstock.hotel.restaurant at 1,922m, and the mountain suddenly feels yours. By late afternoon, the lake glows gold, the peaks catch the last sun, and you watch it all from your balcony.
The ski area isn’t big, but enough to enjoy the mountains along with other winter activities. There’s a nice beginner zone for kids, and mostly red and black runs from the ridge for more confident skiers.
Staying on top of the mountain lets you make first tracks on freshly groomed slopes before the lifts open. We did a couple of runs before breakfast, absolutely worth it. In summer, the same principle applies: start your ridge hike before the tourists arrive.
And yes, don’t miss the apple strudel at the top, it’s so good, you’ll want to come back just for it.
